HONG KONG 1867 cover to American sailor on USS Shenandoah at Hong Kong, China; cover franked w/ 45¢ - 1861 Issue 12¢ pair & single and three 3¢ singles; cork cancels, black East Smithfield, PA June 4 pmk, red London Paid 6/17/67, red "1d" and "24" handstamps; Hong Kong 8/3/67 receiver on back; this ship was active 1862-87 w/ action in the Civil War, then later visiting ports in Europe, North Africa, South & Central America and the Far East; during the time of this cover (1866-68) it was visiting some newly opened ports of Japan as well as rescuing sailors and visiting Korea and China; stamps only AVG to F, small part back cover torn away from opening; scarce destination (Image)
