image 65, 3¢ Rose on Mustard Cover, XF, with large piece missing at top and with 3-bar circular grid ccl. Also, with very scarce "EQUALITY/ILL." cds ccl with ms "June/26" in center. Addressed to "R.D. Clifton Esqr/Bartlett College/Cincinnati/Ohio"; cover opened roughly at right. Equality was a small town of about 360 in 1860's, which became the Gallatin County seat in 1826 due to the salt mines and, ironically, due to special laws for Illinois salt mines, had more slaves than free people in the 1820 census (Image)

Cover also with "ICE ISLAND/T-3/OCT 13 1953/NORTH POLE" cds ccl at lower left; from TSgt. W.T. Harris III to his wife in San Angelo, TX. Ice Island was actually a floating iceberg; a scientific weather station was built on it and became known as a "Drift Station" and was in use off-and-on until it ran aground near Wainwright, Alaska.
