image 1896 Athens Olympics holograph (written by oneself) ledger page headed "List of EH Flack's/Performances since June 1891" including his Gold Medal performances in the 800m & 1500m at the First Modern Olympiad, and also for the marathon: "I was leading 3 miles from Athens, had to give up as I was quite run out & could not have run another 100 yards to save my life. The race was won by Louis a Greek Peasant amidst general rejoicing", minor peripheral damage but overall fine & wholly legible. The ledger was apparently intended for his eyes only, and was discovered in 1960, some 25 years after his death, when his friend and accounting colleague Sir Gordon Allard took over Flack's old desk. Offered with a folder of research material including photocopies of articles, photographs (5), booklet 'The Lion of Athens' & ephemera. Ex Trevor Vincent OAM. One of Australia's most important Olympics artefacts. Edwin Harold ('Teddy') Flack was Australia's only entrant at the 1896 Games and, in winning two events, became our first Olympic Gold Medallist. The journal covers the period in which Flack also won the Mile at the 1893 Australasian Championships; and the 880yds & Mile at the 1894 Victorian Championships. He 'retired' after the 1896 Games to become a gentleman-farmer & successful accountant. (Image1)
