Century Incoming Mail. 1778 (1 Sept.) entire letter from London "By the Packet" to Spanish Town, rated "1N" and showing, on reverse, Dockwra "penny/post/paid/w/we" datestamp alongside "1/se" Bishop mark; unusual with a Dockwra datestamp and with interesting comments including "The late engagement between Admiral Keppel and the Brest fleet.....the expectations of the people at large were not answered....The treatment of the Congress of America of our Commissioners and their conciliatory propositions... the march of General Clinton with the Army from Philadelphia to New York through the Jersies", etc. Photo
