1826 (Feb 4) lengthy entire to Yorkshire "per Andromeda/Feb 18 1826" with a largely very fine strike of the small undated single-oval 'HOBART TOWN/V.D.L' h/s (most strikes are poor), step 'PORTSMOUTH/SHIP LETTER' h/s on the face, London transit b/s of 5JY5 in red, straightline 'KIRKBYMOORSIDE' h/s, redirected to London with largely superb 'YORK/JY10/1826/132' b/s, various rate markings, light soiling & minor internal repairs with archival tape.The historically fascinating letter states "...this Colony is in a state of political warfare...He [the Chief Justice ??] is quite idolised...too humane for a colony composed as this is, a prisoner need not have a Counsel...he takes care to watch every point for them...I am sorry to see the Governor get more & more unpopular...The Council have suspended the Attorney-General...3 Attorneys...are to be struck of [sic] the Rolls for advocating the Attorney General's case and giving their tongues too much latitude..." [In 1823, Joseph Tice Gellibrand was appointed the island's first Attorney-General. An advocate for trial reform, he was at odds with the autocratic Governor George Arthur. In 1825, he was charged with unprofessional conduct & lost his government position. Later, along with John Batman, Gellibrand was a leading member of the Port Phillip Association]
1829 undated OHMS outer to London with an above-average strike of the double-oval undated 'LAUNCESTON' h/s & signed at L/L "J [or T ?] Thomson/Lt RM", largely very fine 'SHIP LETTER/MARGATE' stepped b/s & rated "2/8", London arrival b/s of 17OC17/1829, a couple of folds with some internal repairs with archival tape. [An enigma: the Army Museum of Tasmania doesn't record a Royal Marines detachment in VDL later than 1812. Perhaps Thomson was the Governor's aide de camp?]
1842-53 prestamp entires (mostly) including 1842 to London with an unusually fine & complete strike of the huge GPO d/s in red, 1842 Hobart to Campbell Town endorsed "Missent", 1846 Hobart to Launceston with very fine 'PAID/1SP1/1846' d/s in red, postmasters' manuscripts of "Ross" x3 & "Richmond", two with boxed 'CAMP TOWN/...' d/s, 1850 & 1855 with different '[crown]/FREE' d/s in red & both signed by Governor "WDenison" at L/L, another of 1850 signed "Chester Eardley-Wilmot" (son of Denison's predecessor), some minor problems but generally fine to very fine.

1862 envelope to Scotland with Imperf 4d pale blue SG 36 vertical pair (almost full margins, the lower unit with 6mm scissor-cut into the design) tied by two very fine to superb strikes of Second Allocation BN '28', postmaster's manuscript endorsement "Elizabeth Town/22 January 62", diamond 'LAUNCESTON' d/s in red across the flap, London cds of MR19/62 in red on the face, very fine unframed 'ST ANDREWS' & 'CUPAR FIFE' arrival b/s (originally inscribed 'CUPAR PIPE'), minor blemishes. 1853 Couriers Soft Yellowish Paper Early Impressions 1d pale blue SG 1 horizontal strip of 3 from the top of the sheetlet, margins good to huge with complete outer framelines except at the base of the first unit, neat First Allocation BN '11' cancels of Avoca, Cat £4500++. A rare & highly desirable multiple.
1853 Couriers Plate I First State Brilliant Colours 4d bright red-orange SG 5, good even margins, faint stain at U/L, light BN cancel, Cat £1000. RPSofL Certificate (1998) does not mention the discolouration.
1858 'TASMANIA' 1/- deep vermilion SG 41 horizontal pair, margins close to good except where just shaved at the base of the right-hand unit, small fault at top between the units & minor hinge-thinning, large-part o.g., Cat £1800+.
1863-71 Experimental Separations Perf 12 by Walch & Sons under Contract to the Post Office 1d carmine with Error of Watermark '2' SG 70a, bars cancel of Hobart, Cat £2750. An underrated rarity. Ex Collins, Julian Beresfard, 'Isleham', David Cohen and Joseph Hackmey. Clear RPSofV Certificate (1998) and RPSofL Certificate (2008) that states "perfs at top improved". [Gary Diffen had only two pen-cancelled stamps. About 30 examples are recorded, most with manuscript fiscal cancellations and/or faked cancellations. Only four stamps have been authenticated as genuine postally used examples]
1870 Sidefaces 2d imperforate plate proof block of 4 in deep green on gummed Crown/CC paper from the U/L corner of the sheet with Current Number '42' at U/R, hinge remainders in the upper margin only, the stamps are unmounted.
