Newfoundland - Air mail 1919 "Hawker" air stamp 3c. brown optd. "FIRST/TRANS-/ATLANTIC/AIR POST/April, 1919", used on First Transatlantic Air Mail Attempt cover by Harry Hawker and Maj. MacKenzie Grieve in a Sopwith plane from St. John's on May 18, 1919 to Ireland. (After flying about 1100 miles they were forced down in the sea near a Danish tramp steamer "Mary" whose crew rescued them.) The stamp tied "ST. JOHN'S/APR 12/2-PM/1919", and cover backstamped London May 30, 1919 on official UK post label "found open (torn) and officialy secured", minor imperfection as vert. fold. Five stamps with traces of hinge marks, one stamp with a thinny spot, and few separated perfs between few stamps on edges, but nevertheless a fresh and fine multiple. Few stamps signed "KESSLER". Newfoundland - Air mail 1919 (July 17) Third Transatlantic Attempt: Cover from St. John's to London franked Air "Trans-Atlantic/AIR POST/1919/ONE DOLLAR" on 15c. bright scarlet tied by "ST. JOHN'S/JUL 12/1919" datestamp, on the reverse with London '7 JA 20' arrival c.d.s., with a vertical fold and minor imperfection (sender's name cut out) but still good. (After the crash on May 18, the "Martinsyde" was rebuilt. Major Raynham's navigator was now Lt. Biddelscombe. During the two months wait 25 covers, franked with the $1 "Alcock" stamp, were added to the original mail. These are cancelled St. John's on July 12, as this cover. The plane again crashed on take-off on July 17, the flight was abandoned and the mail was taken to England by Raynham but was forgotten and not handed to the British P.O. in London until the following January.
