1919 (July 17) Third Transatlantic Attempt: Cover from St. John's to London franked Air "Trans-Atlantic/AIR POST/1919/ONE DOLLAR" on 15c. bright scarlet tied by "ST. JOHN'S/JUL 12/1919" datestamp, on the reverse with London '7 JA 20' arrival c.d.s., with a vertical fold and minor imperfection (sender's name cut out) but still good. (After the crash on May 18, the "Martinsyde" was rebuilt. Major Raynham's navigator was now Lt. Biddelscombe. During the two months wait 25 covers, franked with the $1 "Alcock" stamp, were added to the original mail. These are cancelled St. John's on July 12, as this cover. The plane again crashed on take-off on July 17, the flight was abandoned and the mail was taken to England by Raynham but was forgotten and not handed to the British P.O. in London until the following January. All covers were then backstamped January 7, 1920.)
