1843-48 Cantonal Issues Zurich 1843 Numerals 4r black with Underprint of Vertical Red Lines Mi 1i (SG Z4), close even margins, shallow thin that doesn't affect the very fine appearance, rosette cancel in red, Cat €15,000 (£20,000). 1843-48 Cantonal Issues Geneva (Genf) 1843 Diptych 5c+5c black/olive-green setenant pair Mi 1 (SG G1) comprising two single stamps expertly repaired & rejoined resulting in a pair of very fine appearance with margins close to good & outer framelines except at left, rosette cancels in red, Cat €40,000 (£49,000) as a pair or €16,000 (£20,000) as two singles. A very attractive example of this rare item. Emil Rellstab (1988) & Pascal Scheller (2010) Certificates as Zumstein 4L+4R or Yvert 4 respectively.
1843-48 Cantonal Issues Basel 1845 2½r carmine black & blue Dove Mi 1 (SG B1), small corner fault at L/R & some thinning, red cancellation, Cat €13,000 (£20,000). An attractive example of the world's first embossed, first tricoloured and first 'Bird' stamp. One of the most technically important of all Classic issues. Pascal Scheller Certificate (2010) as Yvert No 8 states - translated - "genuine, with faults".
1849-51 Transitional Period Geneva (Genf; formerly attributed to Vaud) 1849 4c grey-black & red Posthorn Mi 1 (SG L1), expertly repaired with margins good to large, very fine rosette cancel in red, Cat €19,000 (£25,000). A very attractive example of this rarity that has thematic appeal for Postmen or Music. Pascal Scheller Certificate (2010) as Yvert No 5.
1849-51 Transitional Period Zurich (formerly attributed to Winterthur) 1850 2½r black & red Mi 4 (SG L4), very fine with margins close to large with ornaments in red except at right, fine rosette cancel in black, Cat €3800 (£4500). 1857 entire to "Australia - Melbourne" with scarce franking of Streubels with Silk Thread 15r red & 40r yellow-green x2 (all with margins at places) tied by diamond-of-bars & boxed 'PP' with 3-line 'LOCARNO' d/s alongside, transits 'BASEL/BRIEFEXPEDITION', 'SUISSE/ST LOUIS' in red on the face, 'LYON A MARSEILLE 2o' TPO & 'PARIS' all of 17/MAI/57, faint 'SHIP LETTER/GPO MELBOURNE' & partial arrival backstamp - town illegible - of JY10/1857, minor blemishes. A rare origin-destination piece in this period. [Mail from Victoria to Switzerland is common but we recall only one other 1850s item from Switzerland to Victoria]
