image BLUE OVERPRINT: 'S.M.' on De La Rue Rouletted 2d dull orange, rouletting at left & otherwise cut from the sheet, tied by very fine GPO cds of AU27/68 (a very early date for a Blue Overprint: see below) to plain large-part local outer from which the printed portion has been removed, light ironed-out vertical fold left of centre. The stamp is rated S. Ex AE Fryar. Number 2 in Anthony Presgrave's Census of thirteen 'S.M.' cover, of which only two others are franked with a Blue Overprint. Ron Butler states at page 18 that "At an uncertain date towards the end of 1868 the colour used for the overprints was changed to blue." We have recorded usages in September 1868 but this may well be the earliest recorded date for a Blue Overprint. Gibbons lists the basic stamp SG 152 as being issued on an unspecified date in August 1868, confirming that this a very early usage.

The 'Besancon' cover with De La Rue Perf 10xRouletted 2d - also rated S - sold for SFr2900. The 'Sir Humphrey' (Brian Farmer) cover with Perf 10 2d, described as "one of the relatively few Departmental covers of very fine appearance" - but not the equal of the current item - sold at our auction of 8.10.2005 for $6115. The stamp is rated S. Number 8 in Anthony Presgrave's Census of thirteen covers. [Illustrated by Ron Butler at page 140] This is the lower part only of the summons, creating the initial impression is that this is not the entire postal article. However, the two backstamps are both across two panels & prove that this is the entire article, being the portion headed 'Proof of Service' by a police constable & with colourless embossing 'POLICE OFFICE/[crown]/PORT ADELAIDE'. We note that service was made to the defendant's daughter (was that adequate?) at "Tam O'Shanter's Belt", the local name for the area that became Regency Park, 6km NW of Adelaide.

The stamp definitely belongs to the cover, and can be hinged back into place. The stamp is rated S. Number 13 in Anthony Presgrave's Census of 13 'S.M.' covers. Many years ago, Don Pearce acquired the cover from prominent Adelaide collector, Martin Walker, stating at the time that one day he would find the missing stamp. And he did!
