3d olive-green to 1/- brown (ex 10d) upper-right corner blocks of 4 each with Plate Number '1', Value/Sheet Number and Error of Watermark 'SUOT[H]' for 'SOUTH', some minor perf separation/reinforcing in the upper margins only, many units are unmounted, Cat $5250 (2002). An extremely scarce, desirable and difficult to assemble 'set'. [The 'SUOTH' error is not listed on the 10d and was not recorded by Bill Purves. The ACSC records only two examples of the 1/-, one being this block]

Many of these items are scarce to rare: for example, of the 4d 4th Ptg only one other piece has been recorded; the 1/- 1st Ptg was not recorded by Bill Purves or the ACSC; of the 2/6d 1st Ptg and 2nd Ptg only two other pieces from each have been recorded; of the 5/- only one other piece has been recorded.

THREE PENCE: 3d pale olive-green with the Watermark Sideways ACSC S18a (SG 268a), well centred, 'KADINA/OC--/04/SA' squared-circle, Cat $3000 (£1700). Underrated. From the Second Printing, with 'THREE PENCE' in deep olive: see ACSC footnote #2. The ACSC states that "about one dozen used examples [and no mint] are known...all are cancelled at Kadina". However, Gary Diffen recorded only five singles and a pair. More attractive than the 'Chartwell' example, that sold for £440.
THREE PENCE: Perf 12 3d olive-green SG 280 vertical pair from the upper-right of the sheet with Plate Number '1' and Imperforate at Right ACSC S19b, minor central perf separation/reinforcing, the upper unit with minor gumside blemishes and a few toned perf-tips, Cat $3500+. Ex Ric Slade-Slade. The ACSC states that two sheets - 12 units - were affected. Gary Diffen's similar but unmounted pair sold for £1200.

A dramatic piece that is probably the largest surviving multiple from the sheet of 60, of which a photograph is included. John Williams' (UK) pair sold at our auction of 6.3.2010 for $1865 and again on 6.8.2021 for $1615

A very scarce franking. The rate was 2½d x2 + 3d registration fee. Ex Michael Blake: sold for $595.

EIGHT PENCE: 8d ultramarine with 'EIGHT PENCE' 16½mm Long and 'EIGNT' for 'EIGHT' ACSC S26c (SG 272a), 'ANGASTON/AP26/04/[SA]' squared-circle cancel well clear of the error, Cat $3000 (£3000). This famous error occurred on [Pos 19; R2/9] in the sheet. The Post Office stated that some 50 examples had been sold before the error was noted. The offending unit was then removed from the remaining sheets, which were issued with [Pos 19] blank & a normal single lightly tacked in the margin! The intercepted errors were officially incinerated.
The ACSC states "it is much rarer used than mint, with probably less than 10 examples known". Gary Diffen recorded 12 used examples: his very lightly cancelled stamp sold for £1200. William Frazer's example sold for £2520. Jeff Harris' stamp sold for $2795, & another example sold at our auction of 10.4.2010 for $2990. The two examples in the 'Yarramundi' Collection sold for $4790 and an extraordinary $8385 respectively.
EIGHT PENCE: 8d ultramarine with 'EIGHT PENCE' 16½mm Long and 'EIGNT' for 'EIGHT' ACSC S26c (SG 272a) in horizontal pair with normal stamp [Pos 19-20] + 3d, tied to piece from a large envelope by part-strikes of the 'REGISTERED ADELAIDE/SA' squared-circle clear of the error, Cat $3000++ (£3000++), for a used single. A famous piece, believed to be the only used example in a multiple, making it a highly significant item for collectors of setenant issues. Ex AE Fryar, Julian Beresford and 'Besancon' (III): sold for SFr2055.

EIGHT PENCE: Irregular Compound Perf 8d ultramarine with 'EIGHT PENCE' 19mm Long and Perf 11½x12½x11½x11½, light indistinct squared-circle cancel. An unrecognised rarity that is unlisted in Gibbons and in the ACSC. Ex Maxwell and JRW (Bill) Purves, who states at pp76-77 that the variety was caused by one side being imperforate & corrected with the Perf 12½ machine. From the First Printing, he recorded "two or three" examples, including this stamp, & from the second printing "again, only two or three copies".

A very scarce franking: the 3d is undercatalogued at $100 on cover & the 10d is unpriced on cover. The rate was 2½d x4 + 3d registration fee, and the envelope almost certainly contained stamps.
ONE SHILLING: 1/- brown with 'POSTAGE' & 'ONE SHILLING' in Brown-Red ACSC S30A (SG 275c), an obvious & very attractive example, well centred & very lightly mounted, Cat $2000 (£1400). Superb. Although often regarded as an error, the bicolour stamps are from the initial run of the first printing. During the print-run, the colour discrepancy was noted and corrected: see Bill Purves at page 88 where he states that it "...may be regarded as approaching the status of an error".
ONE SHILLING: 1/- brown with 'POSTAGE' & 'ONE SHILLING' in Brown-Red ACSC S30A (SG 275c) horizontal pair being obvious & very attractive examples, well centred, 'PARCEL PO ADELAIDE/DE19/02/SA' cds, Cat $4000+ (£2400+), for singles. A rare piece, probably the largest recorded used multiple.

The ACSC states "Ten pairs exist; one is in the Royal Collection". In fact, four of the pairs are in two blocks of 4. Michael Blake' pair - rough perforations & small hinge remainder - sold for $2975. The 'Chartwell' pair sold for £1560.
ONE SHILLING: 1/- brown upper-right corner pair with Plate Number '1' and Value/Sheet Number '1s 000703' in Bright Violet ACSC S30Bza (SG 275), lightly mounted. JRW (Bill) Purves had not seen Value/Sheet Number pieces from either portion of the First Printing, and the ACSC states "No examples...have been recorded", making this one of the rarest such items in the series. The only other example known is the single with part-number included in Lot 1362.
FIVE SHILLINGS: 5/- rose-pink ACSC S32 (SG 277) marginal block of 4 from the right of the sheet, exceptional centring, very lightly mounted, Cat $500++ (£480++), for singles. A very scarce multiple.
