1882 SURCHARGE: 'HALF-/PENNY' on Perf 10 1d green SG 181 block of 48 (6x8) from the top of the left-hand pane with Dropped 'P' in 'PENNY' on units R1/2 and R3/2 plus Value/Sheet Number '1d 61172' in Vermilion at upper-left, large-part o.g. with many units being unmounted, Cat £672++, for mounted singles. [This block demonstrates that the overprint was a forme of 12 (6x2), in which the second unit has the 'P' of 'PENNY' Dropped, repeated four times]
1882 SURCHARGE: 'HALF-/PENNY' on Perf 10 1d green SG 181 x4 (the first unit with 'P' of 'PENNY' Dropped) on Mutual Fire Insurance Co of South Australia advertising cover with all-over promotion in rosine on the reverse, GPO duplex cancels of FE9/83 & 'KEYNETON/SA' arrival backstamp of the next day, minor spotting on the address side. A very scarce franking on a very scarce advertising envelope.

1883-95 PERF 10: 'Bantam' ½d chocolate SG 182 block of 60 (10x6), generally well centred, large-part o.g. with many units being unmounted, Cat £1140++, for mounted singles.
1883-95 PERF 10: 3d sage-green SG 183 + Tannenberg Perf 15 2½d violet-blue SG 234 on cover to Germany "Per SS Rome", 'REGISTERED ADELAIDE/NO7/94/SA' squared-circles & 'R'-in-oval h/s, 'HAMELN/9.12.94' arrival backstamp, the flap sealed with red wax over which a perforated label embossed '.../The/Bank/of/Adelaide' in red has been affixed. We have not previously seen this label or this form of securing a letter.
1883-95 PERF 10: 4d as SG 184 in a bright mauve shade large-part left-hand pane of 50 (5x10) with Plate Number '1' and Sheet Number '4d 002558' in Vermilion both at lower-left, some peripheral damage but the stamps are very fine to superb with full unmounted o.g., Cat £2750++, for mounted singles. A rare multiple.
1883-95 PERF 10: 4d violet SG 184 horizontal strip of 3 with Wing Margin at Right plus Perkins Bacon Perf 10x11½-12½ 4d deep mauve (probably SG 138) on cover to Bavaria, worn 'REGISTERED ADELAIDE/JU2/90/SA' squared-circle cancels & very late usage - probably per favor - of the curved 'REGISTERED/No___' handstamp, German 'Vom Auslande/uber Bahnpost/Kufstein- Munchen' TPO registration label, 'MUNCHEN VII' & 'MUNCHEN VIII' arrival backstamps both of 8/JUL/90, minor blemishes including some toned perfs. The pre-UPU rate was 6d x2 + 4d registration. [The sender was the prominent philatelist Otto Treichel: his cachet on the flap reveals that he was a music retailer & 'TEACHER OF ZITHER']

1891 PERF 10x11½-12½: 'Bantam' ½d red-brown SG 186 block of 78 (13x6) with most units showing evidence of die-wear manifesting as grey hair on the Queen, generally well centred, one unit with a minor thin, large-part o.g. with many units being unmounted, Cat £2730++, for mounted singles. A rare block. [All the horizontal rows are Perf 10. However, the vertical rows alternate between Perf 10 and Perf 11½-12½, creating irregular compound perfs across the sheet]

1891 PERF 10x11½-12½: 'Bantam' ½d red-brown SG 186 and '5D.' on 6d bright red-brown on cover to the Channel Islands, 'REGISTERED ADELAIDE/AU1/93/SA' squared-circle cancels & 'R'-in-oval h/s, London transit of 3SP93 in red on the face & 'JERSEY/ C2 / SP5/93' arrival backstamp. A scarce franking, to an unusual destination.
1891 PERF 10x11½-12½: 'Bantam' ½d deep red-brown horizontal pair Perf 10x10x10x11½ Imperforate Between SG 186a, well centred, large-part o.g., Cat £2000. Rare. Ex Rodney Perry's sale of 6.12.1979 (part of Lot 237). Superior to the similar 'Besancon' (II)/Gary Diffen pair - short perfs at left - that sold for £960.This is actually a different error from the 'Besancon'/Diffen pair. That item - stated that only three pairs have been recorded - is a regular compound Perf 10x11½, which is consistent with the method that produced alternate columns in the two gauges, the missing central perfs intended to be Perf 10. The pair offered here is an irregular compound, caused by a column being skipped. If it had been perforated, the vertical perfs would have been 11½-11½-10 or 11½-10-10, in either case inconsistent with the standard layout.

1893-94 PERF 15: 'Bantam' ½d red-brown single and horizontal strip of 10 on cover to New York "Via Frisco", 'REGISTERED ADELAIDE/MY6/96/SA' cancels & 'R'-in-oval h/s, 'San Francisco, Cal/JUN 4 1896/ F.D. /REGISTERED' transit backstamp. A very scarce franking, paying the 2½d letter rate + 3d registration.
1895-99 PERF 13: 'Bantam' ½d red-brown horizontal pair Imperforate Between SG 191a block of 4 with the vertical perfs at right misplaced into the designs, large-part o.g., Cat £3500+, for two used pairs. Rare. Gary Diffen had an unused pair, stated to be one of only two recorded, which was unsold with an estimate of £1000-£1200. The error was unpriced by Gibbons at the time; it has since been priced but for used only (presumably in error).
