Cat No: 88 block of 4
ONE PENNY: 1d grey-green SG 88 block of 4, a few split/reinforced perfs, light indistinct cancels, Cat £100+. A very scarce multiple. Ex Harry Lower: sold for $725.
ONE PENNY: 1d grey-green SG 88 plus De La Rue Perf 10 2d dull red-orange on mourning cover to NSW, Port Adelaide cds of AU8/70, Sydney transit & 'NEWCASTLE' arrival backstamp of AU18/1870, minor repaired tear at the top & minor blemishes. A very unusual Two Issue franking for the scarce 3d inter-colonial rate.
ONE PENNY: 1d deep green (unlisted shade) horizontal pair on cover to "Port", GPO cds of MR22/72 & poor Port Adelaide arrival backstamp, ironed-out vertical fold and the cover a bit aged.
THREE PENCE: '3-PENCE' in Red on 4d dull ultramarine SG 91, strong colours, a little aged with large-part but dessicated o.g., Cat £1600. A rare stamp. Superior to the 'Besancon' (III) example - rounded corner at upper-right & redistributed gum - that sold for SFr1570. [In 'Shilling Violet' of Dec 1991, Don Pearce wrote that "discolouration of the paper...is the norm"]
THREE PENCE: '3-PENCE' in Red on 4d dull ultramarine SG 91 horizontal pair, one pulled perf at the base otherwise unusually fine for this issue, Port Adelaide cds of JA4/71, Cat £260+, for singles. A rare multiple. Michael Blake's superb pair sold for $610.
THREE PENCE: '3-PENCE' in Bright Red on 4d ultramarine SG 91 plus Perf 11½-12½ 'TEN PENCE' in Black on 9d yellow-orange SG 79 tied to small piece by 'PORT ADELAIDE/ AU15/70/SA' cds, Cat £215+. Unpublished research by Gary Diffen indicates that there were two printings with the red overprint. This stamp is a brighter ultramarine than the previous two lots. It is also dated only 9 days after the ERD, suggesting that this was the earlier issued printing. [Only three covers via Brindisi at the 1/1d rate have been recorded: this would have been a fourth.]
THREE PENCE: '3-PENCE' in Red on 4d dull ultramarine SG 91, stained by the brown gum, on cover to NSW with GPO cds of DE20/70 & Sydney arrival backstamps of DE29/1870, light crease at left & the flap removed. A rare franking, paying the scarce 3d inter-colonial rate. Only three covers and a front are recorded franked with the Red Surcharge.

THREE PENCE: '3-PENCE' in Black on 4d pale ultramarine as SG 92 but with Double Overprint, shallow thin at the top & a few trimmed perfs at lower-left, light 'MARRABEL/JU17/72/SA' cds (rated RRR). Unlisted by Gibbons, and absent from Gary Diffen's exceptional collection of Errors. The original overprint is lightly applied to the lower-right of the second overprint (which itself is under-inked).
THREE PENCE: '3-PENCE' in Black on 4d bright ultramarine SG 93 marginal example from the left of the sheet Imperforate at Left with vertical watermark lines at left confirming it is from the left of the sheet, GPO cds of SP11/71. Rare & superb.
THREE PENCE: '3-PENCE' in Black on 4d bright ultramarine SG 93 horizontal pair & single (from another row) on cover to Lancashire "Via Brindisi", very lightly cancelled with GPO cds of JA31/72, fine 'MANCHESTER' arrival backstamp of 18MR72, opened-out & two repaired tears well clear of the stamps, a little aged. A rare make-up of the 9d rate.
