image SIX PENCE: 6d Prussian blue SG 33, a large example with full rouletting, on cover to Bedfordshire with GPO cds of SP13/69, very fine 'DUNSTABLE/NO7/69' arrival b/s, a couple of minor repaired peripheral tears. A rare franking: Don Pearce states that only three covers have been recorded bearing the Prussian blue.   Prussian blue, developed in about 1706, was the first synthetic pigment. The inventor, Johann Leonhard Frisch, was German and the pigment came to be known as 'German blue' or more commonly 'Prussian blue', but was also called 'Parisian (or 'Paris') blue'.  It is used in paint, dyes and Japanese woodblock prints, and is the blue in 'blueprints'. It is also used in medicine to treat poisoning with heavy metals. Hydrogen cyanide is also known as prussic acid, which is derived from Prussian blue.  To underscore the origins of the pigment, from soon after its discovery, Prussian blue was the predominant colour of the uniforms of Prussian soldiers.
