ONE PENNY: 1d bright yellow-green SG 19 block of 12 (6x2), full vertical rouletting & cut from the sheet at top & base to largely preserve the designs, some minor reinforcing of roulettes, large-part o.g., Cat £2040++. Ex Colonel Harry Napier and John Boker. Peter Jaffé's block of 12 (6x2) - with significant faults - sold for $2760.
ONE PENNY: 1d bright yellow-green SG 19 horizontal pair with misplaced rouletting resulting in 'ONE PENNY' presenting at the top, on debt recovery entire to "Arkaba/Kanyaka" with 'PORT AUGUSTA/OC4/62/SA' cds, 'STIRLING' (OC5) transit & 'KANYAKA' (OC6) arrival b/s, manuscript "Not at Arkaba" & superb 'UNCLAIMED' h/s of Kanyaka (?, b/s of NO17/62), GPO arrival b/s of NO19. Most attractive. [Kanyaka was one of the largest sheep & cattle stations in the Flinders Ranges. PO 1858; renamed Wilson 28.2.1881. Arkaba PO opened only in 1870; closed 1.2.1883]
ONE PENNY: 1d deep green SG 23 horizontal pair with full rouletting except at the top where cut from the sheet to largely preserve the design, tied to Wagener cover to Stepney by indistinct '30' cancels of 'TANUNDA' (OC25/69 cds alongside), partial '[PO]/RAILWAY' b/s, back flap torn.
ONE PENNY: 1d deep yellow-green SG 24 marginal horizontal pair from the left of the sheet, full rouletting, ironed-out creasing, large-part o.g., Cat £650+, for singles.
TWO PENCE: 2d pale red SG 24a block of 18 (6x3) being two rejoined blocks of 9 with full rouletting, large-part o.g., Cat £4950++, for unused singles. A marvellous showpiece, stated by Don Pearce to be the largest recorded unused multiple from any of the Perkins Bacon 2d printings. Ex Leslie Hausberg, Arthur Hind, Colonel Harry Napier and John Boker.
TWO PENCE: 2d pale vermilion SG 25 block of 4 being two rejoined horizontal pairs, full rouletting, large-part o.g., Cat £640++, for unused singles. Michael Blake's superb mint block of 4 of SG 26, also Cat £640++, sold for $5125.

TWO PENCE: 2d bright vermilion SG 26 block of 9, brilliant colour, full rouletting except at the base where cut from the sheet to preserve the design, large-part o.g. with the central horizontal strip being unmounted, Cat £1440++, for unused singles. Superb. Michael Blake's superb mint block of 4 sold for $5125.
FOUR PENCE: 4d dull violet SG 27 block of 12 (4x3), full rouletting, a few minor split/reinforced roulettes, large-part o.g., Cat £2160++, for unused singles. The largest recorded unused multiple. Ex Rev James Mursell, Ric Slade-Slade and 'Holding'. A mint block of 4 sold at our auction of 14.8.2004 for $1585.
FOUR PENCE: 4d dull purple SG 27 with rouletting at the sides otherwise cut from the sheet to largely preserve the design, plus 6d dull ultramarine SG 30 an unusually large stamp with rouletting on three sides & cut from the sheet well clear of the design at the base, on cover to Derbyshire "Via Marseilles" with fine '80' cancels & 'PORT-LINCOLN/OC12/67/S.A' cds, GPO transit backstamp, 'LONDON/ B /PAID/ A /14DE67' transit in red on the face & ' DI /DERBY/ DE14/67' arrival backstamp, minor faults on the reverse. Only three covers have been recorded with the 4d SG 27.
SIX PENCE: 6d violet-blue SG 28, rouletting at right & base otherwise cut from the sheet to largely preserve the design, large-part o.g.; 6d greenish blue SG 29, a large example, unused; and 6d dull ultramarine SG 30 , rouletting three sides & cut from the sheet to preserve the design, unused; Cat £1175.

SIX PENCE: 6d violet-blue SG 28 (or violet-ultramarine SG 31) block of 4, full rouletting, small separation fault at left of the first unit, a little aged, unused, both SG 28 & 31 Cat £2000+, for singles. A rare multiple. Michael Blake's very fine mint single sold for $670.
SIX PENCE: 6d violet-blue SG 28 huge single with full rouletting & cut from the sheet at top & base with fragments of the adjoining units at top & base, very fine 'PAID/FE7/1860/=ADELAIDE SA=' cds being six weeks earlier than Gibbons' Earlest Recorded Date. Superb.
SIX PENCE: 6d dull violet-blue SG 28 block of 4 with full rouletting, on cover to Scotland "via Marseilles" with very fine 'PAID/MY19/1860/ 3 /=ADELAIDE-S.A=' cds in blue, 'BEITH/JY9/1860' arrival backstamp also in blue, light folds & minor blemishes. A very scarce multiple and a rare franking. Ex John Griffiths: sold for £242...thirty years ago.

SIX PENCE: 6d dull blue SG 32 block of 4, full rouletting, ironed-out crease across the right-hand units doesn't detract from the very fine facial appearance, minor thin between the upper units at top, large-part o.g., Cat £1700++, for unused singles. Another rare multiple. Ex Alfred Caspary, Josiah Lilly and John Boker.
SIX PENCE: 6d dull blue SG 32 with full rouletting, on outer with full 'A Pirie & Sons' watermark, to Victoria and tied by 'G-P-O/MR17/69/ADELAIDE' cds, superb Melbourne arrival backstamp of MR20/68, pencil notations on the flap "R Lowe 15.1.60" and "a beauty!", with which we concur.
SIX PENCE: 6d Prussian blue SG 33, a large example with full rouletting, on cover to Bedfordshire with GPO cds of SP13/69, very fine 'DUNSTABLE/NO7/69' arrival b/s, a couple of minor repaired peripheral tears. A rare franking: Don Pearce states that only three covers have been recorded bearing the Prussian blue.
Prussian blue, developed in about 1706, was the first synthetic pigment. The inventor, Johann Leonhard Frisch, was German and the pigment came to be known as 'German blue' or more commonly 'Prussian blue', but was also called 'Parisian (or 'Paris') blue'. It is used in paint, dyes and Japanese woodblock prints, and is the blue in 'blueprints'. It is also used in medicine to treat poisoning with heavy metals. Hydrogen cyanide is also known as prussic acid, which is derived from Prussian blue.
To underscore the origins of the pigment, from soon after its discovery, Prussian blue was the predominant colour of the uniforms of Prussian soldiers.

NINE PENCE: 9d grey-lilac SG 34 block of 4, rouletted at top & left and cut from the sheet to preserve the designs, virtually full o.g. and the lower units are both unmounted, Cat £720++, for unused singles. This block almost certainly is contiguous to the marginal block of 6 (3x2) Ex 'Besancon' (III) - stated to be the largest known unused multiple - that sold for SFr1815.
NINE PENCE: 9d grey-lilac SG 34 horizontal strip of 3, cut from the sheet to largely preserve the designs, the central unit with an ironed-out crease, 'PORT ADELAIDE/JY28/66/SA' cds. The largest recorded used multiple.
NINE PENCE: 9d grey-lilac SG 34 four singles with Major Pre-Printing Paper Folds, one with JY25/63 cds in blue & another with '5' cancel of North Adelaide.

NINE PENCE: 9d grey-lilac horizontal pair Imperforate Between SG 34a and probably also imperf at right, minor separation fault at lower-left, 'GPO ADELAIDE/FE17/72/SA' cds, Cat £4500. Ex Ernest Collins (1928) and Henry Phillip Manus (1933). Gary Diffen has recorded only one other pair.
TEN PENCE: 'TEN PENCE' in Blue on 9d red-orange SG 35 with Overprint Sub-Type 1 (dropped 'N' of 'PENCE'), full rouletting & unusually well centred, unused, Cat £600. Superior to Harry Lower's example - cut from the sheet to preserve the design - sold for $640.
TEN PENCE: 'TEN PENCE' in Blue on 9d orange-red SG 35, the six overprint sub-types, Cat £300. Difficult to assemble. Michael Blake's 'set' - "a few minor blemishes" - sold for $442.

TEN PENCE: 'TEN PENCE' in Blue on 9d orange-red SG 35, rouletting on three sides & cut from the sheet at the base, tied by Adelaide cds of SP29/66 to cover to Devon "Per Contract packet to Suez" and "via Marseilles", very fine 'EXETER/NO12/66' "thimble" arrival b/s, minor blemishes. Ex Colonel Harry Napier and John Boker, sold for £170...more than 30 years ago. Superior to Harry Lower's similar cover that sold for $460+.
TEN PENCE: 'TEN PENCE' in Blue on 9d yellow-orange SG 36 with Overprint Sub-Type VI (first 'E' of 'PENCE' higher), rouletting on three sides & cut from the sheet at top & base to preserve the design, large-part o.g., Cat £800.

TEN PENCE: 'TEN PENCE' in Blue on 9d yellow-orange SG 36, very fine solo franking to Scotland "via Marseille" tied by GPO cds of OC29/67, London transit cds of 14DE67 in red on the face & very fine 'PAISLEY/DE15/67' arrival b/s, part of the flap missing. Very fresh & attractive.
TEN PENCE: 'TEN PENCE' in Black on 9d yellow SG 37 with Overprint Sub-Type VI (first 'E' of 'PENCE' higher), full rouletting, part (redistributed) o.g., Cat £4000. A rare stamp. [Michael Blake's example sold for $3495. The John Boker/Ron Butler (described there as having "small-part o.g.") & 'Besancon' (II) example sold for SFr4355]
TEN PENCE: 'TEN PENCE' in Black on 9d yellow with the Surcharge Inverted at the Top SG 37a with Overprint Sub-Type 3 ('T' of 'TEN' almost horizontal & 'N' of 'TEN' close to vertical), full rouletting and one of the few well centred examples, a little aged, 'G.P.O/NO10/69/ADELAIDE' cds largely clear of the surcharge, Cat £7500. An attractive example of this famous error of which 'Shilling Violet' No 16 (Sep 1989) recorded a mere 15 known (not including Peter Jaffé's unique pair). Ex Colonel Harry Napier (but not the stamp offered in his auction of 11.5.1976). RPSofL Certificate (1965) unkindly states "stained". More attractive than Michael Blake's off-centre example - the surcharge misplaced & partly off the stamp - that sold for $10,485.
TEN PENCE: 'TEN PENCE' in Black on 9d yellow SG 37, cut from the sheet at left to preserve the design, tied by GPO cds of OC12/69 to mourning cover to "Royal Yacht Club/.../London", London arrival cds of NO29/69 in red on the face, part of the flap missing. Very attractive. A very scarce franking: Michael Blake's solo franking to Scotland sold for $465. [The addressee was either the Royal London Yacht Club, or the Royal Thames Yacht Club] (Image1)

ONE SHILLING: 1/- yellow SG 36, rouletting except at the top where cut from the sheet to preserve the design, a few trimmed roulettes at right, large-part o.g., Cat £1600. A very scarce & underrated stamp. Absent from 'Besancon'. Michael Blake's example with no gum sold for $2560.
ONE SHILLING: 1/- olive-yellow (shades) with GPO cds of OC25/62 or OC27/1862 or numerals '2' of Hindmarsh or '30' of Tanunda (minor thin). These shades are the result of salt-water immersion aboard the 'Colombo', which foundered off Minicoy Island in the Laccadives on 19.11.1862. Three of these are illustrated by Brian Peace at page 101. Harry Lower's two examples sold together for $175.

ONE SHILLING: 1/- yellow SG 36, horizontal rouletting misplaced above the value table & cut from the sheet to preserve the design resulting in an enormous example with 'ONE SHILLING' at Top & Base, minor faults, tied by GPO cds of SP26/1862 to cover with 'VIA MARSEILLES' embossing at upper-left & 9d grey-lilac SG 34 added for the late fee & tied with circle-in-bars cancel in blue, superb 'BIRMINGHAM/NO14/62' arrival b/s, the flimsy envelope with a few faults still quite presentable. Only four covers with the 1/- yellow have been recorded.
ONE SHILLING: 1/- brown SG 39-42 group, full rouletting, unused. [As stated in the introductory notes, the Gibbons shade descriptors for the 1/- brown group are sometimes unhelpful: the predominant shade is red-brown. This stamp is perhaps the closest to a 'grey'-brown - SG 39, Cat £450 - but we invite personal assessment of the shades in this group]

A rare used multiple, believed to be the largest recorded. Gary Diffen's two blocks of 6 - stated there to be the largest recorded multiples - sold for £840 & £780 respectively (2009).

TWO SHILLINGS: 2/- rose-carmine irregular strip of 3 with the vertical pair at right Imperforate Between SG 43a, characteristically discoloured from the 'blackboy' gum used for this printing, very worn strikes of the circle-in-bars cancel of the GPO, Cat £2750. Ex AE Fryar and Henry Frenkle, and believed to be the only recorded example of the imperf between error. Certainly, Gary Diffen's exceptional collection of Errors did not include an example. However, his unique pair of the 1/- yellow imperf horizontally SG 38a - slightly trimmed at the base, Cat £9500 - sold for £5400.
