Cancels collection mostly on loose stamps with lots of very fine strikes, includes Concentric Rings Numerals on a range of 1870-77 Eagle & Arms issues noted '2' of Potchefstroom (rarely used) and First British Occupation overprints plus later issues (some of the 'superb' strikes are likely to be Otto forgeries), Numeral in Triangle noted '1' of Pretoria on Postal Card, '17' of Nylstroom on Pietersburg 1901 local & '36' wth fair 'EUREKA KAAP GOUDVELD' cds on faulty cover, also Dumb Obliterators including four-ring & cork types, then Datestamps with coloured strikes, Johannesburg 'PAKKETPOST' group and scarcer items such as 'HAENERTSBURG' squared circle, 'MALANSKRAL' cds & '...RELDEN' (?) mail bag seal, plus some 'foreign' cancels including 'SELUKWE/S.RHODESIA', a few COGH Numerals and Cape Town 'SHIPPING POSTMASTER' rubber cds, etc, etc, condition a little variable but most are fine to very fine.

Boksburg: 'BOKSBURG/12 FEB/91/Z.A.R.' squared octagon (unlisted by Putzel), light but legible strike alongside Vurtheim 2d olive & 6d blue tied by largely very fine Triangular Barred Numeral 'ZAR/6' on return-addressed envelope registered to Cape Town, 'GEREGISTREERD/JOHANNESBURG' triple-ring oval b/s in blue, minor edge faults on back flap only. PO 1.1.1888.
Comatiepoort: 'COMATIEPOORT/-8.DEC.94/Z.A.R.' double-ring cds, largely fine strike alongside almost very fine Triangular Barred Numeral 'ZAR/34' plus another strike on 1d added to Postal Card Vurtheim 1d rose sent to Belgium paying 2d foreign postcard rate (reduced to 1d from 13.9.1895), lengthy personal message with Pretoria b/s, Cape Town squared circle transit & Bruxelles '31/DECE/1894' arrival on face. Renamed from Comatie Drift PA -.8.1893; renamed Komatiepoort PO -.-.1897. This is apparently the only recorded date of usage for the numeral cancel.
Marthinus Wesselstroom (1): Concentric Multi-Ring Numeral '10' largely very fine strike on First British Occupation 4d green & 6d olive (minor faults) on cover to England, no despatch cds, 'DURBAN/ 8/9/1879/NATAL' transit and 'COLCHESTER/OC9/79' arrival b/s, edge fault at right. The Packet Letter rate to Great Britain via Natal was 10d per ½oz comprising 4d letter rate to Natal plus 6d Packet to UK. Office opened 1861; closed after 1884. Putzel rated RR in this period. Mathews lists this numeral as allocated to M.W.Stroom, but apparently no 'tie' is recorded.
Marthinus Wesselstroom (2): 'M.W.STROOM/-3.JAN.96/Z.A.R.' double-ring cds (asterisk stops; type not listed by Putzel), largely fine strike alongside very fine Triangular Barred Numeral 'ZAR/14' on Postal Card Vurtheim 1d rose to Johannesburg. PO re-opened 1.1.1888; renamed Wakkerstroom 1.3.1903. Putzel rated R in this period. The numeral is previously recorded in 1890 only; this is now the latest known date.
May (1): 'MAY/20DEC1907/TRANSVAAL' cds, largely superb strike tying KEVII ½d green on face of postcard titled 'A renowned Zulu chief (Tshinawayo) and his adjutant' in ceremonial dress outside hut, to Switzerland underpaying 1d rate and taxed with Cape Town octagonal 'T/["10"]/CENTIMES' h/s on address side, minor blemishes. Postal Agency only; renamed from Driefontein, Germiston PA -.-.1906; closed circa 1907 (no longer listed). Putzel rated Extremely Rare ("no postmark has been seen").
Middelburg (2): 'MIDDELBURG/30.OCT.95/Z.A.R.' double-ring cds (not listed by Putzel), largely very fine strike alongside very fine Triangular Barred Numeral 'ZAR/15' on Postal Card Vurtheim 1d rose to Bethany, Orange Free State, minor bends & blemishes. PO re-opened 1.11.1887. The numeral is previously recorded in 1893-94 only; this is now the latest known date. [See also Lot 2788]
Nylstroom: 'NYLSTROOM/8-SEP.94/Z.A.R.' double-ring cds, largely very fine strike alongside Vurtheim 2½d mauve tied by fine strike of Triangular Barred Numeral 'ZAR/17' on E. Tamsen envelope to Madeira, light 'FUNCHAL/24SET94' arrival b/s, minor aging marks. Earliest recorded date for this CDS. Nijlstroom PO -.-.1866; renamed Nylstroom during the First British Occupation but continued using both names during the Second Republic.
Pietersburg: 'PIETERSBURG14.MRT.98/Z.A.R.' double-ring cds, largely very fine b/s with Enschedé 1d tied by largely superb bold strike of Concentric Multi-Ring Numeral '26' on cover, Pretoria arrival b/s partly overlapping a few blemishes including pencil annotations on face. The Numeral was allocated to Sterkfontein (closed 1890); this appears to be an unrecorded re-allocation. Office opened before 1885; PO 1.11.1887.
Smitsdorp (3): 'SMITSDORP/4 FEB/92/Z.A.R.' squared octagon, three fine strikes on Vurtheim 1d carmine & 2d olive pair on cover to Germany paying 5d Europe letter rate via Great Britain, Cape Town & London transits and 'ALTONA/3-3.92' arrival b/s, a few faults & aging marks with small part back flap missing. PO re-opened -.-.1891; closed 1.3.1903. Putzel rated RR in this period.
Utrecht: 'UTRECHT/Z.A.R./AU 5/79/ZUID AFRIKA' cds (cross stops), very fine strike alongside First British Occupation 3d mauve on green imperf overprinted 'V.R./Transvaal' SG 119e (margins close to touching) tied by very fine Concentric Multi-Ring Numeral '11' on cover to Pretoria, minor edge faults & a few aging marks. Office opened circa 1868; PO 1.11.1887; transferred to Natal 1.6.1902. One dated use of 13.08.1879 is recorded, making this only the second dated and now earliest known usage of the numeral.
Zeerust (2): 'ZEERUST/JAN 18/86/TRANSVAAL' cds, largely very fine strike alongside superb Concentric Multi-Ring Numeral '8' on Postal Card Vurtheim 1d red with 'POTCHEFSTROOM/TRANSVAAL' arrival b/s, repaired edge faults at left not affecting markings. This CDS recorded 1881-86 only. PO re-opened circa 1877 (first listed).
