ROAD BOARD
Overprinted 'R.B.'
Sale No: 247
Lot No: 676
Symbol: CTO

image RED OVERPRINT: 'R.B ' (No Stop after 'B ') on Rouletted 1d yellow-green, rouletting on three sides & cut from the sheet to preserve the design at the base & a little into the design at the top, a little soiled at right, apparently cancelled-to-order with an undated blue cachet that seems to read 'CENTRAL MAIN ROADS BOARD/SOUTH/AUSTRALIA'. The No Stop variety is unlisted by Ron Butler and this is the only recorded example so it should be rated RRRRRR. [The only recorded date for the 1d With Stop is 19.7.1869] See also Lots 678, 681, 683, 684, 695 and 697, all struck with the same cachet. Except for lot 695 (see below), these and the item above represent a 'set' of the First Issue values (all overprinted in red except the 2/- in black). Based on the several other examples we have recorded, we suggest that (at least) three presentation sets were gifted in 1868 or 1869. Lot 695 the 4d Black Overprint is an anomaly, being recorded only from 1873. If this stamp was also part of a presentation set, it is to be expected that the other values with Black Overprint would also have received this marking.
