1863 cover to Victoria with Rough Perf 14-16 6d deep green SG 17 tied by very fine Rays '87' of 'IPSWICH' (b/s), Brisbane transit & very fine Melbourne arrival b/s of MY-25/63 in red. A top-quality Classic cover which, for Queensland, is a rarity. Absent from Ben Palmer's Census: in fact, he records no 1863 covers to Victoria.
1867 entire town letter being a largely printed shareholders' notice for the Brisbane Gas Company with Chalons 1d vermilion tied by 'QL'-in-Rays cancel, superb b/s of the distinctive & rare Type 2 '67/MR2/ B /=BRISBANE=' cds, two vertical folds just clear of the stamp with associated soiling. [See Hugh Campbell at page 176, where his Types 1 & 2 are transposed. At page 175, he states that the LRD is 2.2.1867]
1873 cover from an unknown Queensland port to "Redfern/Sydney", rated "3" & endorsed "Late Fee" with 3d greenish grey SG 66 x2 - one damaged - cancelled on arrival at Sydney where superb double-oval 'LOOSE SHIP/LETTER' handstamp struck below, minor blemishes. Ben Palmer's Census at page 110. [The inter-colonial rate was 3d + 3d late fee]

1860 Large Star Imperf 1d rose-carmine SG 1 horizontal strip of 4, full margins with outer framelines on all sides & a fragment of the adjoining unit at left, good colour, the first unit with a small repaired tear & the last unit with two ironed-out creases, untidy Rays '131' cancels of Gladstone remarkably clear of the Queen's face on three of the four units, Cat £3200++ for singles. RPSofV Certificate (2022). A key rarity of Queensland. [The largest recorded multiple is a strip of 6 Ex Snowden (1953) & John White (1997) that has not been on the market since then. This strip & another strip of 4 are the next largest multiples]
1866-67 Lithographed No Watermark 5/- pale rose SG 58, tiny thin spot at left, large-part o.g., Cat £1300. A very scarce sramp unused. RPSofV Certificate (2021).
1868-78 Crown/Q Perf 13 1d orange-vermilion horizontal Imperf Pair SG 83a, margins close to large with complete outer framelines, unused, Cat £800 for a pair. Superb! BPA Certificate (1987) for a block of 4, from which this is the upper pair. [Gary Diffen's block of 4 sold for £780]
1880 Surcharge 'Half-penny' on 1d reddish brown Die II SG 151a, an unusually large example, large-part o.g., Cat £850. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2014) states "rare".
1882 Large Chalons "Set" of 2/- x4 - one with the rarely seen '...WILKINSON & CO BANK NOTE ENGRAVER...' imprint below) & 2/6d Imperf Plate Proof singles in the approved colours for the five values, a few small separation faults. Rare. [The inclusion of the 2/6d in green is consistent with Basset Hull's statement at page 158 that this was the only colour in which the 2/6d was printed, and that there was no 2/- in this colour. Bernie Manning's similar very fine set - none with the imprint - sold for $4194. NB: the proofs were printed in London; the imprint was burnished-off the plates before the stamps were printed in Brisbane] (5)

1882-95 Large Chalons Thick 'Beer Duty' Paper £1 deep green SG 161 complete sheet of 30 without margins, [1/2] with Re-Entry (Doubling at the Base) & [6/4] with Retouch (Thick Frame at Lower-Right) SG 161a & b and [3/4] with unlisted Doubling of 'QUEENSLAND' (a re-entry noted by Basset Hull & Griffiths), fiscally used with wavy-line pen cancellations, Cat £2780++ (for postally used singles). 1896-1902 Figures in Lower Corners Only 6d yellow-green BW #Q42A (SG 230), a couple of irregular perfs but better perforated than many examples, light 'PARCEL POST/BRANCH/----02/BRISBANE' cds, Cat $35,000 (£16,000).
An exciting new discovery (especially for our vendor, who paid $38 for a small range of Queensland stamps on ebay!) and one of the the finest recorded examples of one of the great rarities of Queensland, and of the Commonwealth Period States issues.
The ACSC advises that "...sixteen examples are recorded. The stamp was first discovered in 1903 shortly after issue...Most examples have the Parcel Post Branch datestamp...The dates range between April and November 1902...Most examples show characteristically rough perforations...Many of the stamps show defects of various sorts..." Ken Scudder at page 212 identifies 19 examples across the four sub-types. This is his Sub-Type 3: "Bust clear of oval"
1897-1908 Figures in Four Corners ½d die proof similar to the approved design but with the figures in the four corners at a 45 degree angle in blue-green on thin wove paper with part papermaker's watermark '...D STA...', endorsed in pencil "Not appd 1898", small piece of adhesive tape at the top from where the proof was attached to the printer's record book. 1897-1908 Figures in Four Corners 2½d perforated Plate Proof blocks of 4 on gummed watermarked (mostly inverted) paper in twelve different colours ACSC #Q50(PP)1A-U group including in turquoise (the issued colour), a couple of minor gum blemishes but generally very fine with large-part o.g., Cat $14,400+ as singles.
