Shawmut, with a complement of 35, was commissioned November 1864 and briefly searched for the CSS Tallahassee. Shawsheen (ex - Young American), with a complement of 40, served with the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron and was engaged at the Battle of Hampton Roads, Roanoke Island, and Elizabeth City. This letter traveled to the Tahoma by way of the Union soon after the latter had been converted to a supply dispatch ship in the Gulf.,
