South Carolina, with a complement of 112, was initially assigned to the Gulf Blockading Squadron but after refitting was transferred to the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron. Wabash, with a complement of 672, was flagship of the Atlantic Blockading Squadron. She took part in the capture of Forts Hatteras and Clark. On October 29, 1861, she was desginated the flagship of the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron and sailed south to spearhead the assault on Port Royal, which would be the South Atlantic Blockading Squadron's new headquarters. This would have been mailed sometime between August and december 1863 when Winona was being refitted in Baltimore,

Winona, with a complement of 114, was at New Orleans through the initial attempt to take Vicksburg. She was part of Farragut's fleet in steaming past the Vicksburg batteries, then repassed Vicksburg with the fleet and returned to New Orleans and the West Gulf Blockading Squadron.
