image Canada-Newfoundland UX2, 2c Queen Victoria, XF, with small ding in upper left corner. St. John's, Newfoundland cds ccl and red Boston "PAID" receiving cds ccl on front. Addressed to "Prof. Wm. N. Rice/Wesleyan University,/Middletown Conn. U.S. America." Rice was a Methodist minister, geologist, author and lecturer, especially interested in reconciling science and theology. Long note on reverse dated Sept. 10, 1879 at Portugal Cove by Henry L. Osborn, a marine zoologist/biologist, writing about his marine specimen collection and the few new specimens he has been able to obtain recently from the fishing trawlers. Very nice piece of history!
