image Documents (8) 1923-35 relating to Antarctic explorer Douglas Mawson, incl 6 signed (in ink) by him. From the archive of A Leigh Hunt, NZ businessman & founder in 1933 of the Antarctic Society of NZ. Items incl: Midland Hotel (Wellington, NZ), notepaper re invitation 16/1/1923 (signed); cablegram 28/2/1930 from Mawson (in Sydney) to Hunt re inability to contact Byrd's Expedition by radio; 16/7/1930 letter (signed) from Adelaide to Hunt with BANZARE letterhead, similar letter 15/4/1931 (signed) re arrangements for Hunt to act as local agent for visit of Mawson's ship "Discovery" (once Scott's ship) to Wellington 26-29 April; photo 20 x 15cm (corner damaged) of Discovery at Clyde Quay, Wgtn (large crowd); similar letter (signed) 20/5/1931 thanking Hunt for his help during the visit. Also Hunt's "discovery, May 2nd 1931" personal file containing many (50+) documents relating to the Discovery at Wellington (correspondence in duplicate, receipts for supplies obtained (incl 20 live sheep) & telegram ex Captain K.N. MacKenzie, personal notes etc). An important Antarctic archive. (Image)

From the archive of Arthur Leigh Hunt (prominent NZ businessman, entrepreneur, advocate of Antarctic exploration & founder in Nov 1933 of the Antarctic Society of NZ). Items incl: 2 tickets (Nov 999-1000) for reception to Byrd in Wellington 16/4/1930, both signed by him & b/s Byrd Antarctic Expedition pictorial cachet; similar and (unsigned) for a reception 8/12/33; fine mounted portrait photo of Byrd & his terrier Igloo at Wgtn, Nov 1928 (signed twice by him); similar photo (signed by Byrd) of Byrd & Douglas Mawson together, Nov 1928 (the 2 first met in Hunt's office); sepia portrait photo 17 x 22mm of Byrd at Antarctic base c1933?, signed by him & inscribed to NZ Antarctic Society. Plus various other Byrd-related letters/covers, 1934 critical "Truth" article re expedition ship c1955 Moral Rearmament statement signed by Byrd, 1966 formal letter of thanks from US Ambassador to Hunt for his decades of assistance to Byrd & US Antarctic activities.
