image St. Georges Military Prison. 1902 (Feb 7) Cover from Cape Colony franked 1d pair, a white censor seal tied by violet Press Censor cachet, addressed to "Convict J.G Vorsler 323, H.M Military Prison, St. Georges, Bermuda" with "A.A.G, P. of War, Prospect" written in red ink at Hamilton, backstamps of Hamilton and St. Georges. Vorsler was one of 36 British subjects convicted as rebels who arrived at Bermuda on the "Montrose" in September 1901; these convicts were kept in the Military Prison at St. Georges until the end of 1901 when they were transferred to a separate prison enclosure on Tuckers Island. 1902 Covers posted in Bermuda to P.O.Ws after the end of the war, a 2d registration envelope franked 1d posted at St. Georges (July 10) to "Capt. P. Wotan, S.S Roland, St. Georges"; and a cover from Hamilton (Aug 6) franked ½d pair to "Mr Morkel, P.O.W, Darrells Island". Wotan was one of fifteen prisoners returning to Germany on the S.S "Roland" which left Hamilton on July 9th, calling at St Georges the following day; the cover was probably delivered to the ship by pilot boat. The second cover with edge faults but the only recorded local cover to a P.O.W after the war, possibly from another prisoner. (2).

After the last official repatriation ship left in January 1903 73 prisoners remained on Hawkins Island, who refused to sign the Oath of Allegiance; their mail was still subject to censorship. 1903 (July 21) Cover franked O.R.C. 1d from Reddersburg, to "Mr D.J Greyling Jr, Prisoner of War, Bermuda Hawkins Island Line B" with Hamilton (Aug 31) backstamp. Greyling was one of 63 prisoners remaining on Hawkins Island (who refused to sign the Oath of Allegiance) when this cover was posted; it was received on the day the camp closed, the remaining prisoners being set free to fend for themselves in Hamilton, where this cover would have been delivered. Probably the latest recorded cover to a Boer P.O.W.
