1907 & 1927 covers from London to USA or locally both addressed in the characteristic scrawl of Major-General Horatio Gordon Robley with sketches of Maori designs on the reverse (one of moko tattooing), the accompanying letters both signed "G Robley", the first stating "...I got a head from there lately...", the second "...There is a national collection being made of indigenous races [in Boston]...my Maoris have a place..."; also 24pp brochure 'Robley - Soldier with a Pencil' by LW Melvin (1957); a few faults. [Major-General Horatio Gordon Robley saw service in New Zealand during the Maori Wars of the 1860s, retaining a lifetime fascination with the country & her indigenous people. He even fathered a child by a Maori woman. An enthusiastic collector, Robley managed to acquire no fewer than 35 mokomokai (the heads of heavily tattooed Maori that were severed after death & treated for preservation). His 1896 book on moko was key in reviving what had become a lost art]

1915 Gallipoli Campaign OAS usage of a piece of rough cardboard apparently cut from a stores box with message dated "30.5.15", to Hawera with 'HEADQUARTERS/FIELD/7JU15/POST OFFICE/NZ DIVISION' cds & Censor 2239 cachet in rosine, creasing & the writing a bit faded but legible. An early example. [The French supply ship 'St Louis V', carrying a stock of stationery, was sunk by the Ottomans. The consequent makeshift postcards are a highly significant element of the Gallipoli Story. They are recorded from between 29.5.1915 & 3.8.1915 only. It is estimated that only some 25 exist from New Zealanders. Gordon Darge's four examples sold at our auction of 5.3.2011 for an average of $748 each]
1915 Gallipoli Campaign OAS usage of a piece of rough cardboard apparently cut from a stores box with message dated "17.6.15", to Auckland with 'INFANTRY BRIGADE/FIELD/17JU15/POST OFFICE/NZ DIVISION' cds & Censor 1564 cachet in rosine, faint blemishes but unusually fine & legible. ["Cousin Harold" states "Just a piece of cardboard it is all that I have...The news of the fighting here must have been a great shock to New Zealand, but I do not think it can last much longer, the worst is over I think...cardboard is very scarce around here..." & on the reverse "Sorry there is no view on this side" (!)]
1915 Gallipoli Campaign OAS usage of a piece of rough cardboard from a captured Ottoman soap packet with message headed "June 5th", to Ponsonby with 'INFANTRY BRIGADE/FIELD/10JU15/POST OFFICE/NZ DIVISION' cds & Censor 2634 cachet in rosine, minor blemishes. [The writer advises his aunt "...We are still in the firing line..." The similar Gordon Darge/Gary Diffen example - with clipped corners - was stated to be "the only recorded usage of a postcard being created from a Turkish box". Remarkably, this item appears to be the other half from the face of the same packet!]
1915 Gallipoli Campaign usage of a piece of rough cardboard apparently cut from a stores box with hand-drawn 'stamp' of an uncomfortably-happy sender & on the reverse his rendering of the '[crown/snake]/NZ MEDICAL CORPS' badge, the message dated "June 27th/1915" is largely illegible from wear, to Hastings with 'HEADQUARTERS/FIELD/28JU15/POST OFFICE/NZ DIVISION' cds & superb Censor 2698 cachet in rosine, unusual illustrated usage & remarkably fine.
1915 Gallipoli Campaign British Over-Seas Club postcard accompanying a gift parcel for the troops, OAS usage with message headed "EE Section/ANZAC Signal Office/ANZAC MEF 19.10.15" and signed "H Westwood Lieut RE" thanking schoolchildren for "...the presents you so kindly sent us...received by a Cable Section...whose work is to maintain communications in the field...", 'AUST & NZ ARMY CORPS/ HEADQUARTERS/20OC15/...' cds. 1920s 'Big Tree Petrol' Advertising Campaign utilising comic PPCs mainly of George E Studdy's 'Bonzo the Dog' with advertising messages on the address-sides reflecting Bonzo's antics & captions on the viewsides, mostly with various types of Postage Permit imprints but the first three with two different rare handstamped versions in black (2) or violet, and one - stated to be "unique" - with handwritten propaganda & no permit indicium, all but the handwritten card with roneo'd addresses & one with scarce 'NGATORO' arrival cds, a couple defective but most are fine to very fine.
