1889-CC Good. Though the grade is low the coin is an attractive original light grey. One of the superstars of the Morgan series, even mid-grade circ examples of the 1889-CC are scarce and the price appreciation of these coins in recent years proves it. The consignor purchased this coin in the mid-1960's for $47.50. (Image)

1893-O G+ light grey perhaps brightened long ago. From a mintage of just 300,000 all struck in January of 1893. The large majority of the issue must have gone into circulation at or near the time they were minted because very few uncirculated examples are known, and most specimens, such as the present example, are well-worn. Even some of the finest coin cabinets have a circulated coin for the 1893-O Morgan. The great Treasury release of the early 1960's yielded a few scattered pieces, but there is no record of even a single bag of 1893-O being found. Also, the famous Redfield Hoard of over 400,000 silver dollars did not contain an1893-O. (Trivia: Most O-mint Morgan Dollars are very common - so how many O-Mint silver dollars were among Redfield's massive holdings? Answer: ZERO. The Redfield Hoard did not contain a single silver dollar from the New Orleans mint.) (Image)

1893-S Fine. A medium-grey original with excellent highlights and great eye-appeal for the grade. Like its counterpart from the New Orleans Mint, all 1893-S Morgans were struck in January of that year. Always in demand, no single issue in the Morgan Dollar series has greater popularity across the board. All 1893-S dollars were produced from the same obverse die and it is distinguished by having a small raised diagonal line on the crossbar of the T in LIBERTY on the headband. It is easily visible on the present coin if you know where to look. In any event, here's an opportunity to obtain an important coin, though it might take deeper pockets than usual to do so. (Image)

1894 VF+ there is faint evidence that the coin was cleaned long ago. The first true key date in the series from the P-Mint, the coin's scarcity is in-line with the 1893-S, but this fact is not reflected in the price. In fact, its mintage is a mere 110,000 - only 10,000 more than the 93-S. Though no 94-Ps were in the Treasury release, a few stray bags of 1894-P surfaced in the 1950's and 1960's. The contents of these bags were widely dispersed, and the 94-P remains a difficult coin to find at the present time. This date is almost always missing from the many partial Morgan Dollar sets that we routinely handle. The consignor purchased the present coin in the mid-1960's for $55. (Image)

1901 XF. Faint evidence of a light cleaning but still acceptable. Slightly scarce in circulated condition, this issue is extremely rare uncirculated. Speculation is that this date is the single most-affected by the Pittman Act of 1918. From an original mintage of just under 7 million pieces, over 99% of the issue was subsequently destroyed. No 1901-P's were included in the Treasury's mid-1960's holdings. (Image)

1903-O MS60 white. The obv has a faintly "polished" look; the rev is a beautiful MS63 or better. The saga of the 1903-O is legendary. Considered rare in any grade prior to 1962, several thousand became available as part of the Treasury release of silver dollars in that year. This issue, while far from a common date, is no longer considered to be one of the "stopper" Morgan Dollars. (Image)

1903-S XF brightened still ok. Rare in any better grade, even AU50 coins bid for $1700 wholesale. Most of the issue went into circulation at or near the time they were struck since the typical coin encountered is G or VG. Over a million pieces minted, so countless numbers must have been melted in 1919 under the provisions of the Pittman Act. Many advanced collections have an XF or AU representing this issue. (Image)
