Dutch Country Auctions Sale: 324

Miscellaneous
$5 Gold

Sale No: 324
Lot No: 724
Symbol:
Cat No: 1803

image 1803 over 2 AU+ Cleaned. Ample detail but the coin has had a cleaning and residual hairlines show. The coin also has a slight twist @ K11:30 appearing to have been used as a makeshift screwdriver at one time. Like all early US gold pieces, this coins is seldom seen. Estimates suggest that less than 1% of the original mintages (1795 - 1807) survive. PCGS has certified 399 as of this writing, but this undoubtedly includes many re-submissions. A suitable example for a more sophisticated type set or perhaps an opportunity for the budget-minded collector to end up w/ a truly scarce coin! Certainly worth inspecting! (Note: ALL 1803 half-eagles have the overdate.) (Image)
