Dutch Country Auctions Sale: 16

Miscellaneous
$10 Gold

Sale No: 16
Lot No: 160
Symbol:
Cat No: 1845O

image 1845-O PCGS AU50. This is the re-punched date variety with an extra 4 and 5 showing clearly under the main digits of the date. In their text on gold coins, authors Garrett & Guth describe the 1845-O eagle as " . . . . very rare in AU condition, with Mint State examples exceedingly rare." (Of 168 total 1845-O Eagles graded by PCGS, only 6 are in mint state.) The PCGS website shows the value of the re-punched date variety at $4,250, but interestingly, the last auction record for one in AU50 is from Feb 2018 where one sold for an astonishing $5,760, making our estimated hammer prices appear quite conservative. Whatever the true value, this lot represents an offering that is not likely to be repeated any time in the near future. If your tastes are in rare gold coins, here's an opportunity. (Image)

Lot No: 161

Cat No: 1846O

image 1846-O Normal Date NGC AU50 . Similar in rarity to the 1845-O (see comments for the previous lot.) There are overdates for the 1846-O $10 Eagle as well, but considered to only be of equal rarity to the normal date. At PCGS, of 176 total submissions for this issue, only 5 are mint state. The weakness in the strike is noted by Garrett and Guth who comment, "The striking qualities are generally weaker [on this issue] than on other O-Mint dates from this era, and surfaces normally show excessive or heavy contact marks." It appears that all things considered, the present piece may be a higher-quality coin for this very rare issue. (Image)
