image Lieutenant General Sir Edmund Herring miniatures group of 20 comprising K.C.M.G., K.B.E., Distinguished Service Order, Military Cross, Knight Order of St John, 1914-15 Star trio Mentioned in Despatches, 1939-45 Star, Africa Star, Pacific Star, Defence Medal, 1939-45 War Medal, Australia Service Medal, 1953 QEII Coronation Medal, 1977 Silver Jubilee Medal, Efficiency Decoration, Distinguished Service Cross (USA), War Cross (Greece), all with original ribbons, mounted; plus QEII 1977 Silver Jubilee Medal in original presentation case, and biography 'A Life of Sir Edmund Herring' by Stuart Sayers h/b, 364pp signed by the author and Edmund Herring. [Featured as one of the fifty most prominent Australians with a military background by the Australian War Memorial, where the full size group are housed (excluding the QEII Jubilee Medal), plus family correspondence, speech drafts, newspaper articles, photographs including WWI 1917-18 miltary album with scenes from the Balkans, plus many with royalty and dignitaries, also horse bridle & bit, whip, walking and swagger sticks, map magnifier in leather case, compass etc. a rare opportunity to own a unique and historically important miniatures group] Edmund Francis Herring born 1892 in Maryborough, Victoria, died 1982 Camberwell Vic. While studying at Oxford in Great Britain World War I broke out, joining the Royal Field Artillery he fought on the Macedonian front. In April 1917, as an acting Captain and artillery observer on 'Pip ridge' during the Battle of Dorian, Herring was, for his "conspicious gallantry and devotion to duty" whilst under heavy shell fire, awarded the Military Cross. At Salonika on 24 October 1918, having been promoted to acting Major, Herring assumed command of 'B Battery, 99th Field Artillery Brigade', and as a battery commander he was awarded the Distinguished Service Order. In 1922 he joined the Australian Army as a legal staff officer in the part-time militia with the rank of captain, rising to the rank of colonel by 1939 and the start of World War II. In December 1940 he commanded the '6th Division Artillery' in the Western Desert Campaign, the Battle of Greece, and participated in the attack on Tobruk. In 1942 he commanded the land forces in the Kokoda Track campaign and in the following year directed operations in the Salamaua-Lae and Finisterre campaigns. Herring then went on to become Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Victoria, and the longest serving Lieutenant-Governor of Victoria (27 years). (Image1)
