Duke of Portland", both to Liverpool, the first with light but readable "LIVERPOOL / EXEMPT SHIP LR" (ExSL.2) and "LIVERPOOL / SHIP LETTER" backstamp (S.13), the 1842 front with superb "LIVERPOOL / EXEMPT SHIP" (ExSL.1) and a "2" charge mark, backstamped octagonal framed "SP 20 43 / LIVERPOOL / SHIP" (S.16). Both addressed to the port of landing and therefore exempt from both ship letter and inland postage charges, the second charged 2d to recover the cost of the master's gratuity.
