Cox via Liverpool" with "LIVERPOOL / SHIP LRE" (S.2) and "2/MA" Bishop Mark, the others from Alexandria, Va. "P. Diana Capt. Hunt", Grenada "p. King Grey Capt. Cash" or Jamaica "p. Mary via L'Pool", with "LIVERPOOL / SHIP" (S.1). Four early ship letters, the first mentioning "the unhappy contest between G. Britain & the Colonies" and its effect on trade. (4).

1800 (Feb 4) Entire letter from London to Philadelphia prepaid 10d, endorsed "P the Fame, Capt E. Jones" with an oval "Ship Letter / (crown) / LONDON" but missing the sailing of that ship from London, the endorsement therefore crossed out and the letter sent by ship from Liverpool, backstamped oval "Ship Lre / (crown) / LIVERPOOL", a "6" charge mark applied upon arrival. A very unusual use of two differing ports ship letters on one letter.

Exempt Ship Letters. 1836 Entire letter from Demerara endorsed "Consignees p. Aberford", and 1842 front with upper flap endorsed "Consignees p. Duke of Portland", both to Liverpool, the first with light but readable "LIVERPOOL / EXEMPT SHIP LR" (ExSL.2) and "LIVERPOOL / SHIP LETTER" backstamp (S.13), the 1842 front with superb "LIVERPOOL / EXEMPT SHIP" (ExSL.1) and a "2" charge mark, backstamped octagonal framed "SP 20 43 / LIVERPOOL / SHIP" (S.16). Both addressed to the port of landing and therefore exempt from both ship letter and inland postage charges, the second charged 2d to recover the cost of the master's gratuity. A scarce pair, the second illustrated on page 147 of "Robertson Revisited" by Tabeart. (2).

Post Paid Withdrawn Ship Letter. 1815 (July 20) Entire letter from Liverpool to Montreal prepaid 1/6, black "POST PAID WITHDRAWN SHIP LETTER / LIVERPOOL" c.d.s placed across the join as usual, endorsed "P. Eliza", charged 1/8½ in Canada. A very reasonable strike of this scarce ship letter c.d.s, the Post Paid Withdrawn Ship Letter regulations only in force for just over nine months, very few PPWSL handstamps recorded on letters to Canada.
