image India Letter. 1838 Entire to Scotland "Per Platina" with black boxed "India / LETTER", backstamped by red boxed "INDIA LETTER / ROMNEY" (In.1) in the London Ship Letter Office with matching red c.d.s, charged 2/8. Robertson and Tabeart show the "India / LETTER" handstamp to be a London mark (Rob. In.10); however the c.12 recorded examples are all on letters landed at Romney in 1835-39. It is therefore clear this mark was applied at Romney, the red India Letter mark then applied in London as the Romney handstamp did not include the port name. Repaired tear to flap, otherwise fine and very scarce. Photo on Page 62. (Image1)
