Ionian Islands. 1821 (June 24) Long entire letter from an army Captain, John Birtwhistle, at Argostoli, Island of Cefalonia, posted to England with partial "ISOLE / IONIE" handstamp and superb arc type "MALTA" (MSF-1c, a very early use), disinfection slits, charged 3/4. The letter contains news of the civil war in Greece, and the large numbers of refugees who have fled to the Ionian Islands.
