1913 (May 14) hand-illustrated cover of the bust of a woman by Herbert G Appleby to his wife in England with 1d red tied by an unusually fine strike of the 'NEWCARNIE/WESTN AUST' cds, 'T/20'-in-hexagon h/s, endorsed on the reverse "p RMS Orsova/Orient May 20", slightly truncated on opening & with minor blemishes. [The next four lots are also from this famous correspondence: see also Lots 212 227 & 244]
1913 (June 13) fashionably attired woman "Yes, I know her", 1d pair (one trimmed on opening) with light strike of the 'NEWCARNIE/WESTN AUST' cds, endorsed on the reverse "p RMS Morea/P&O 9th June".

1913 (Oct 24) Children at the beach "Hurrah! I've caught a mermaid!", 1d pair with fair strike of the 'NEWCARNIE/WESTN AUST' cds, endorsed on the reverse "p RMS Moldavia/P&O 10th Nov", flap removed.
1913 (March) Falk PPC ('West Australian Blacks' Camp') endorsed "Printed Matter", to Turkey with ½d pair (one unit damaged before being affixed) tied to the viewside by Perth cds, assessed at the 1½d postcard rate so taxed with 'T/10' h/s, oddly processed through the Italian PO in Constantinople (arrival cds of 14.4.13), then 'STAMBOUL' the next day & bilingual '.../ERENKECI' (?) cds, a few problems.
1913 (Sep 18) advertising cover for the French firm Deffrennes-Duplouy Freres (Manufacturers) illustrated on the reverse with three factories & an array of Exposition medals, to France with ½d green & 2d grey tied by Melbourne cds, 'LANNOY.../NORD' arrival b/s, minor blemishes, opened-out for display.
1913 (Oct 14) OHMS cover with '("Viticulture")/Department of Agriculture' imprint at L/L, to France with scarce franking of First Wmk ½d green & 2d grey both punctured 'OS/NSW' tied by Sydney machine cancel, Marseilles arrival b/s, the address partly abraded.
1913 (Oct 31) PPC to England with rare franking of 1d red from Plate E with Two Tasmanias ACSC #3d (Cat $400) tied by indistinct cds, redirected on arrival with superb 'DEVONPORT' cds that just intrudes on the variety. [Major varieties are rarely found on cover]
1913 (Dec 10) postcard to "Deep Dene/Tantawanglo/via Candelo" with ½d green punctured 'L/S' of Lassetter's of Sydney (General Merchants) paying the Printed Matter rate tied by Sydney '3' machine cancel. [Commercial perfins on the ½d are very scarce, and rare on cover. Tantawangalo is in the Bega Valley]
1913 (Dec 17) cover to Egypt with Two Issue franking of ½d green & 1d red + KGV Engraved 1d tied by 'KEMPSEY/NSW' cds, four Egyptian b/s including 'PORT-SAID CAIRO/TPO/...' transit, professionally cleaned but some soiling remains.

1913 (c.) usage of ½d green Wrapper + 1d red Die II pair tied by indistinct Qld cds, to Germany, minor bend. [The foreign newspaper rate was 1d for the first 4oz + ½d for each additional 2oz so the article weighed between 8 & 10oz]
1914 (Jan 31) cover to France with 5d chestnut with unlisted White Flaw NW of Western Australia tied by Sydney cds, red & black/white R label, Paris arrival b/s, underpaid ½d but not taxed.
1914 (Feb 5) Norman Bros (Albany) PPC to Norway underpaid with 1d red only tied by Albany cds, Norwegian 1o olive x8 including a block of 4 affixed in lieu of Postage Dues & tied by 'HERRE/-III.14' cds, the viewside soiled. [Herre is a small town on the east coast of Norway, about 150km SW of Oslo]
1914 (Mar) quadruple-rate linen-lined envelope to Germany with very scarce franking of 1d red & 4d orange pairs tied by indistinct Queensland cds, some aging marks.
1914 (Mar 9) cover with First Wmk 1d red (endorsed "R", presumably for registration) & 3d olive (Cat $600 on cover) tied by 'MAREEBA/QUEENSLAND' cds in blue, scarce red & black/white 'MAREEBA' R label, endorsed "closed" at left indicating the premises were unoccupied when delivery was attempted, a little aged.
1914 (Apr 2) usage of black/pink 'TASMANIA/INTERSTATE/PARCEL POST' label with rare franking of First Wmk 6d ultramarine (Cat $600 on cover) & 1/- emerald (Cat $1250 on cover) vertical pair tied by 'WARATAH/TASMANIA' cds, the label with a few faults.
1914 (Apr 20) triple-rate cover to German South West Africa with very scarce franking of ½d green & 5d chestnut pair tied by 'REGISTERED/MELBOURNE' cds, red/white GPO R label, unusually with no backstamps, small repaired tear at top clear of the stamps. Scarce destination.
1914 (Apr 27) double-rate cover to "Prag, Austria" (Bohemia) with First Wmk 3d (Cat $600 on cover) & 5d chestnut (Cat $1000 on cover) tied by very fine 'FREMANTLE/WESTN AUSTRALIA' cds, red/white R label, surprisingly with no b/s, both stamps affected by a light bend.
1914 (Apr 7) Orient Line PPC (SS 'Osterley') to GB with scarce but unauthorised private usage of ½d green punctured Large 'OS' vertical pair - the vertical perfs slightly misaligned - tied by 'MALVERN/VIC' cds & 'PADDINGTON/9MY14/ 8 ' cds after internal redirection. [This is a very scarce stamp on official cover, Cat $350 for a solo franking. Pairs are even scarcer]
1914 (Apr 5) AJ Ratcliffe PPC of 'Daniel White Carriage Builders' to Germany with First Wmk 2d & 2½d tied by oval 'REGISTERED/PERTH WA' d/s, red/white R label partly obscures the 2d & is folded-over the top of the card, 'MUNCHEN 2 B Z' & 'SOLLN 2 ...' arrival cds, the message in German. Registered postcards are extremely scarce.
1914 (May 15) cover to London with First Wmk 4d orange tied by an almost superb - and far above-average - strike of the scarce 'NORFOLK ISLAND/NSW' cds, arrival b/s of 29JU/14. [The cover was paid for registered mail & we expect sending it as ordinary mail was an oversight]
1914 (June 1) OHMS envelope with 'Treasury/Hobart' imprint at base & printed registration lines & 'R'-in-circle in red, scarce franking of First Wmk 4d orange punctured 'T' tied by Hobart cds, scarce blue & black/white 'Hobart.' R label. Very pretty. [The ACSC prices a normal 4d at $400 on cover]
1914 (June 2) usage of 1d Letter Card cut-down to the address-panel only and with hand-written 'postcard' message on reverse, to Germany uprated with ½d only tied by 'MULBRING/NSW' cds, endorsed at left "Received in/this condition/in Ship Room/GPO Sydney/2.6.14", discoloured on the reverse. Most unusual. [The sender's intention was clearly to convert the Letter Card for use as a postcard, for which the rate was 1½d. The endorsement was presumably just a protection against complaint from the addressee, as the item was delivered and docketed "11.7" received/answered on reverse]
1914 (June 3) Tasmanian OPSO entire sent unfranked from 'ELLENDALE' to Hamilton where ½d green punctured 'T' pair added in lieu of Postage Dues & tied by 'HAMILTON' cds. [The ½d punctured 'T' is rarely seen on cover]

1914 (July 8) cover with ½d green & 1d red pair tied by 'HAYMARKET PO' machine cancel, to Germany but with superb 'RETURN TO SENDER' h/s in purple & almost as fine strike of the scarce double-boxed 'UNDELIVERABLE/ APR 23 1915/II MD' d/s in blue plus double-circle 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE/APR/27/1915/SYDNEY NSW' b/s in red, minor soiling/spotting & a small fault at centre-right. A very interesting cover. [Australia declared war on Germany on 4.8.1914. However, by July, Germany had become embroiled in Austro-Hungary's conflict in Serbia. This is probably why a cover dated almost a month before war was declared was detained]
1914 (July 9) cover to Germany with ½d green x2 & 2d grey x2 tied by very fine to superb strikes of the 'LATE FEE/MELBOURNE VIC' cds, scarce red/white 'OPENED BY/CENSOR' label, UNDELIVERABLE' h/s struck twice in violet at London (?), Melbourne DLO b/s of 22AP15 in rosine. Very pretty.

1914 (Oct 10) cover to "Poste-restante" at Port Said Egypt with First Wmk 4d orange tied by very fine 'REGISTERED/ MELBOURNE' cds, red/white GPO R label, bilingual Return to Sender cachet & superb Melbourne DLO b/s in rosine despite the sender's address being on the flap, minor blemishes. [Despite still being part of the Ottoman Empire, Egypt was treated as being within the British 'sphere of influence', and attracted the Empire letter rate of 1d]
1914 (Nov 4) Police Department cover with oval 'POLICE DEPARTMENT/DENILIQUIN/ SUPERINTENDENT'S OFFICE' cachet at L/L, scarce franking of First Wmk 3d punctured 'OS/NSW' pair tied by 'DENILIQUIN/NSW' cds, minor blemishes. [The ACSC prices a normal 3d at $600 on cover]

1914 (Dec 14) cover to Michigan with ½d green and 5d chestnut tied by large oval 'WOOLLOONGABBA/ QUEENSLAND' d/s in blue, scarce red & black/white R label, superb 77x10mm 'PASSED BY CENSOR.' h/s in violet on the reverse. Eye-catching! [Sold at the Prestige auction of 17.2.2012 for $801]
1914 (Dec 16) usage of ½d green Wrapper to "Brighton Grammar School" in Kent, underpaid with Melbourne cds & 'T/10c'-in-octagon h/s, British '1D/IS/P' h/s & Postage Due 1d tied by 'BRIGHTON/-FE15/15' cds.

[The addressee Hubert Lyman Clark was a world authority on echinoderms (= sea stars). His first of several research visits to Australia was in 1913]
1915 (?) complete black/red 'VICTORIA/INTERSTATE/PARCEL POST' label with rare franking of Second Wmk 2/- brown (Cat $6000 on cover) tied by an indistinct cancellation, a little soiled. An outstanding rates item. [2/- was the intrastate rate for a parcel weighing between 7 & 8lb. It was also the rate to GB between 2 & 3lb via the all sea route or up to 1lb via Europe]
