image 1993-96 Kenya Birds definitive issue printed by Helio Courvoisier S.A in Switzerland, original artwork and proofs from the printers archives for the eleven stamps issued in 1993, the 1/50 and 5/- values issued in 1994 and the 6/- value issued in 1996. The unique group comprising unadopted designs by Mrs D. Bochman painted on thick card (5, with wording on a transparent overlay) or by other unknown artists painted on thin card (3, one with central bird cut out); original essays for the fourteen adopted designs, painted on thin card (13) or paper (6/- value), the eleven original designs each mounted with a card surround all with a cachet of Helio Courvoisier on the reverse, the three later essays with wording on a transparent overlay and notes on the required size; and printed coloured proofs of the designs produced by the printers on paper. The original artwork all superbly painted in colour, the mounted essays approx 165x185mm - 220x295mm (therefore all album page size or smaller), the eleven essays adopted for the original 50c - 14/- values all endorsed "Approved" and signed alongside the cachet "GENERAL MANAGER / POSTAL SERVICES / -3 JUL 1992", all the adopted essays endorsed "Utilise" alongside the adopted value, the later 6/- essay with two printed cards from which the original design was copied and a sketch on tracing paper, the printers proofs all endorsed "Approved" and dated on the reverse. Also 1993 F.D.C and mint blocks of the issued stamps. A superb and unique group, all the original artwork exceptionally well executed in colour. (22 Essays + 14 Proofs). Photo on Page 188. 1917 (July 20) Cover from Tanga to Bangkok franked I.E.F 3p + ½a and East Africa & Uganda 1c + 3c all cancelled at Tanga, the two East Africa stamps then ringed as invalid, handstamped "T" with a charge of 35c charge indicated, boxed Dar-Es-Salaam censor cachet dated 22 July, backstamped at Bangkok (Oct 19). Civilian post offices were reopened in Tanganyika from 1st June 1917, but G.E.A stamps did not arrive until October; during this four month period East African stamps were authorised for postal use, and these stamps should therefore not have been disallowed. An unusual mixed franking to a scarce destination, minor toning and light fold at left.

Dar-es-Salaam Internment Camp. 1939-41 Covers and cards from the camp (8), one sent air mail to Switzerland franked 2sh., the others stampless, six on envelopes with instructions concerning replies to internees printed on the reverse (also another of these envelopes used by the Deputy Timber Controller with his Postal Frank handstamp). Cachets include "POSTAL / INTERNMENT CAMP / COMMANDANT / FRANK" (7), oval "INTERNMENT CAMP / PASSED BY / CENSOR / DAR ES SALAAM" (6), and various other censor marks, two covers to Holland or Italy returned because the service had been suspended. Also covers and cards to the camp, posted locally (2) or from Germany (3, two returned with boxed "PARTI / GONE NO ADDRESS"), and a cover from India to Eldoret, redirected to the camp at Dar-es-Salaam and then to South Africa. An interesting lot. (15).
