[On 23.6.1927, the river steamer 'Largeau' ran aground near Brazzaville. H&G state "10 to 19 known", of which the majority are posthumous creations. This is said to be "a genuine use" & 16 days to cover 1000km+ of the Congo seems reasonable but, considering the distressed condition of Gunther Heyd's cover, we have our reservations]

image RAILWAY INCIDENTS: 1945 (July 9) cover from a serviceman at Roswell NM to Ohio, endorsed "FREE" & with Roswell machine, mangled at the base consistent with having been run-over by a train, partly very fine 'DAMAGED IN TRANSIT AT/CRESTLINE, OHIO' cachet in purple at L/L. The only item from this incident recorded by Gwynn & Hoggarth: absent from the Gunther Heyd and Howard Longden collections. ['On the fly' incidents occurred when a mailbag failed to be caught by the machinery at a station: this could result in the bag bouncing onto the tracks & being run-over by the train] Opened in 1941, Walker Air Force Base at Roswell was a key military installation. It was also where Robert Goddard conducted rocket experiments. The 1947 Roswell UFO Incident 'put the town on the map'. We are intrigued by the sender's reference to "RAAF". 'Private' was not an Air Force rank so it probably means something else.
