POSTAL HISTORY: 1872 (May 4) Germain Nicholson cover with 'CLOVER, DOW & CO/SHANGHAE' imprint on the flap crossed-through, to Victoria "per Geelong/via Galle" rated "2/-" in red with QV 24c deep green vertical wing- margin pair (fault at U/R), tied by superb 'S1' obliterator of 'SHANGHAE' (b/s), 'HONG-KONG/ C /MY9/72' transit & 'MELBOURNE/ 2H /JN28/72' arrival b/s, ironed-out wrinkles & creasing still attractive, docketing on the face at left.
BRITISH POST OFFICES IN CHINA: 'CHINA' Overprints selection to $2 including 50c with White Back SG 12c, plus an array of QV to KGV issues mostly used at Shanghai but many others from Amoy, Canton, Foochow including 'F1', Hankow & Swatow plus superb 'NINGPO' on KGV 4c, several 'LIU-KUNG TAU' including a full strike on KEVII 4c on piece, 'Y1' of Yokohama in blue x5, etc, most are part-strikes only but some are large-part to complete & some are superb, condition rather mixed, Cat £2000+ just for the basic stamps. Lots of fun!
