image FAILED NAVAL 1d CONCESSION RATE COVER - RARE "CANNOT BE SENT/EXCEEDS ½OZ." MARK; Attractive 2 Aug. 1877 env. addressed to a "Seaman, H.M.S. Pallas, Besika Bay" [near Troy on the Turkish coast] franked by 1d Red (pl.200) tied by a very fine London duplex but having an initialled mainly v.fine red framed "CANNOT BE SENT/EXCEEDS ½OZ" mark on the front. No evidence of transmission & presumably returned to sender. Rare disallowed overweight 1d Concession Rate mail. Sold for £300 in our Jan. 2010 sale. image 19th CENTURY MAIL; Small group with 1819 EL to Bognor ex Edinburgh, redirected to Newbury and endorsed 'no such person to be found', 1871 env. to Springfield ex London franked 1d red, redirected several times and with "INSUFFICIENTLY/ADDRESSED" h.s. and Inspectors star on front, 1873 1d pink env. to Brighton with framed "GONE AWAY/LEFT NO ADDRESS" mark on rear, 1880 mourning env. within London franked 1d Venetian and endorsed 'Deceased' 1896 ½d PC to Antwerp uprated ½d returned to sender with various returned markings in French, Dutch and English and a few others.
