image Falkland Islands Dependencies: Graham Land: Operation Tabarin: Incoming envelope from the Bank of Montreal in London with “15 I 45” meter franking, addressed to “Captain Andrew Taylor/c/o Post Office/Port Stanley/Falkland Is.” with Stanley PS.3A Mar. 31 and Graham Land “16 JAN 1946” arrival datestamps on reverse. Ex Cottis. Photo. Taylor had assumed command when James Marr was invalided home at the end of 1944 and in Feb. 1945 a third base was established at Hope Bay. On Apr. 11 1945 the “William Scoresby” had left Stanley with stores and mail but had to turn back due to heavy pack ice. The “Fitzroy” eventually reached Deception Island on Jan. 13 1946, Taylor and his men arriving the next day on the “Fitzroy” from Hope Bay. Mail and personnel were transferred to the “Fitzroy” which left next for Port Lockroy where mail was duly sorted, receiving the E1 backstamp, used there on that day only prior to its later use at Stonington Island.
