THE UNIQUE 'PENOE' EARLIEST IMPRESSION COVER
1848-49 Post Paid 2d. blue, position 7, exhibiting the famous 'PENOE' variety, intense deep shade, large to predominantly very large margins, tied by bars cancel on 3 July 1849 folded cover to Bordeaux, leaving the profile quite clear, endorsed 'p. Pondicherry', showing Mauritius crown cds and '6' décimes manuscript rate alongside, reverse with arrival cds on 6 October (SG £45,000 for the stamp used)
This stamp is characteristic of the "dry" or " sticky" impression which results in missing the completion of lines especially on the portrait cheek
Illustrated in colour on page 66 of Hiroyuki Kanai's 'Classic Mauritius' handbook
This is the only recorded 'PENOE' Earliest Impression cover, a major Mauritius rarity and the most important item of this territory featuring a variety

1849-54 Post Paid 2d blue, pair from positions 7-8, exhibiting the 'PENOE' variety at left, sheet margin at left, close at bottom left as a result of an uneven alignment of the cliché, good margins in other respects, tied by '3' bar cancels cover front to Port Louis carried at double rate, alongside showing framed neat 'SOUILLC./JU29.1853.' ds, boxed 'INLAND.' hs and 'MAURITIUS/GPO' crown ds, an extraordinary item featuring the only 2d multiple recorded on cover in the early 'Post Paid' impressions, as well as one of two covers recorded exhibiting a multiple (a pair in both cases) with the famous 'PENOE' variety

Note: The 1d rate was applied for local delivery within the village limits of Mahébourg. The application of the 'MAURITIUS/GPO' crown circle of Port Louis on the same day at lower right leads us to believe that the letter was erroneously put into a mailbag addressed to Port Louis. This is the only example recorded.

1859 Post Paid 1d. red on bluish, position 6, clear to three large margins, neat cancelled by 'PAID' within circle on 8.8.1859 'Bulletin Commercial' newspaper from Port Louis to France, entering the destination country with red Suez cds at left, addressee's wrapper missing as it had to be removed to open the newspaper, one of only three complete newspapers recorded with the exceedingly rare 1d overseas rate, in delightful quality

1859 Post Paid 1d. red on bluish, horizontal pair, positions 4-5, in combination with 1859-61 Britannia 6d. blue, both very slightly cut into at left, with three large margins on other sides, on 12.11.1859 folded cover from Port Louis to Melbourne, tied by oval bar cancels with dispatch 'G.P.O./MAURITIUS' and arrival cds's on back, charged with 4d in red crayon on obverse for Colonial credit, filing fold and tiny scissor cut on the 6d on no significance for this, the only example recorded of this franking

1859 Post Paid 1d. red-brown on bluish, a large margined example from position 4, cancelled by target cancel and paying the 1d circular rate on 1.10.1859 printed matter from Port Louis to France, with red Suez entry cds in France below, addressee's wrapper missing, with manuscript annotation of receipt indicating the sender (the representative in Mauritius of the Comptoir National D'Escompte de la Ville de Paris) and the date of the circular, this also tying the franking, a very rare usage of this rate to a destination overseas
