RARE PRISONER'S LETTER ON SPECIALLY PRINTED "YORK CASTLE/RULES.../" PAPER WITH H.S. "2D" IN CIRCLE; 13 Dec. 1865 EL (some weak folds and with internal dusting but attractive) from prisoner "Robert Popple" to his solicitor in Hull sent unpaid with superb York h.s. "2D" in circle and large part (off edge) "YORK/930" Duplex; the contents are written on a specially printed sheet headed "YORK CASTLE/RULES" (about to whom and how letters to/from Prisoners could be sent) with those rules occupying the first side and with printed heading on the other two sides; "PRISONERS ARE TO CONFINE THEIR WRITING TO THESE TWO PAGES". The letter is from a Mill owner imprisoned for debt who blames the American Civil War for his plight due to a downturn of exports. Fascinating and rare Prison cover. Cross Reference: PRISONS & PRISONERS, POSTAGE DUE MARKS, CIVIL WAR (Image)
