1860-88 Two Pence Issues plating study in two springback albums with a separate page for each of the 120 positions on the plate, each page with an enlarged diagram indicating the features of that position, all positions represented by examples in orange (41), blue (306), yellow (862) &/or grey (175), condition a bit variable but generally fine to very fine, some postmark interest, STC £15,000+. Ex Max Reynolds. [The lot includes a copy of "The 2d Perkins Bacon Plate 1860-88" by Brian Pope & Max Reynolds (1995) - based on this collection - in which the authors speculate that the albums are the work of Dr Harry Osborne and Frank Chadwick. Careful inspection is likely to reveal many better stamps that are not reflected in the quoted catalogue value]

1854 "Penny Black" 1d imperforate plate proof block of 4 in black on ungummed unwatermarked paper, good even margins, some minor burnishing between the units & at U/L. A very fine & attractive block. [Trevor Hiscock's superb single from the base of the sheet sold at the Prestige auction of 22.2.2013 for $611]
1854 "Penny Black" Imperf 1d black SG 1, an unusually large example with margins good to large & fragments of four adjoining units, 15-bar '5' cancel of Guildford, Cat £325.
1854 "Penny Black" Imperf 1d black SG 1 horizontal pair, the second unit with Double-Tailed Swan, margins close to large, minor scissor-cut at the base between the units, the variety unit with a minor thin at the upper-right corner, superb void grid cancels in black, Cat £650+. Ex Trevor Hiscock: sold at the Prestige auction of 22.2.2013 for $465.
1854-55 Lithographs Imperf 4d pale blue SG 3 vertical pair, the lower unit with the obvious but unlisted variety Bug in Bill, good even margins, Cat £750+. BPA Certificate (2005). [Sold at the Prestige auction of 24.5.2008 for $1045]
1854-55 Lithographs Imperf 4d blue SG 3a horizontal pair [155-156] the left-hand unit with the obvious but unlisted variety Bug-Eyed Swan, margins good to large with a fragment of the adjoining unit at upper-left, unused, Cat £900+. An excellent specialist piece: [155] is one of the Creased Transfers recorded by Brian Pope, with the 'R' of 'FOUR' & 'PE' of 'PENCE' Compressed. [156] is one of the Substituted Transfers for the Inverted Frame, having a slight Bulge over 'AG' of 'POSTAGE' & the Frame almost Touching 'E' of 'POSTAGE'. Ex Trevor Hiscock: sold at the Prestige auction of 22.2.2013 for $874.
1854-55 Lithographs Imperf 4d deep dull blue SG 3b, good even margins, lightly cancelled, Cat £850, as it has been since at least 2008! Ex 'Daneswood': sold at the Prestige auction of 29.3.2008 for $930. An unusually fine example of this notoriously difficult stamp, which is from the First Printing.
1854-55 Lithographs Imperf 4d deep dull blue SG 3b, margins close to good, 15-bar '8' cancel of Fremantle, Cat £850. A very fine example of this rare shade, from the First Printing,
1854-55 Lithographs Imperf 4d slate-blue SG 3c, good even margins except at the top where just touched at left, unused, Cat £4000. An undoubted example of this scarce shade, of which unused examples are very elusive.

1854-55 Lithographs Imperf Major Transfer Variety 4d pale blue with Tilted Border SG 3i, margins close to good, unused, Cat £3250. RPSofV Certificate (2006). [The best test for this variety is the presence of small white arcs below the 'OS' of 'POSTAGE']

1854-55 Lithographs Imperf 1/- grey-brown SG 4b marginal vertical pair from the left of the sheet with margins just clear to huge except where a trifle shaved at right of the upper unit, light indistinct cancels, Cat £800+. A very scarce used multiple.

Superb! Ex Martin Button (realised £67/10/- in 1946) and Lars Amundsen (Lot 628: where it was described as "magnificent", with which statement we readily concur). RPSofL Certificate (1943). Cat No: 29 30 & 32
1860-64 Printed in the Colony from Perkins Bacon Plates Rouletted 2d pale-orange, 2d orange-vermilion & 6d sage-green SG 29 30 & 32, all with rouletting on all sides clear of the designs, Cat £1300. Separate Chris Ceremuga Certificates (2011). (3)
1861 Printed by Perkins Bacon Intermediate Perf 14-16 4d vermilion SG 35, characteristic mis-perforation but cut from the sheet to preserve the design creating one of the more attractive examples of this scarce stamp, light 15-bar '8' cancel of Fremantle, Cat £2000. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2006) states "extremely rare used".
1864-79 Crown/CC Perf 12½ 2d mauve Error of Colour SG 55b, slightly faded, a few pulled/short perforations, unused, Cat £22,000. An iconic error. BPA Certificate (1966) as the then SG 65 states "...repaired between 'S' & 'T' at top". However, we cannot discern the repair & believe that the BPA was drawn into error by the presence of a small stain. We would also query why someone would effect a small cosmetic repair but not restore the perforations at the base?? [Sold at the Prestige auction of 12.6.2010 for $7860. Two regummed examples sold at the Prestige auctions of 19.3.2005 & 15.4.2005 for $12,075 - "a couple of tiny imperfections" - & $18,400 - respectively]
1864-79 Crown/CC Perf 12½ 2d mauve Error of Colour SG 55b, well centred, lightly canceled largely clear of the value tablet, Cat £15,000. Rare used, this being one of the finest known examples. Ex 'Besancon' (III): sold for €9680. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2018). [This famous error is much scarcer used than mint, which is priced by Gibbons at £22,000. Stanley Gibbons acquired a mint block of 60 from the postmaster at Albany, and others are recorded. By comparison, as Chris Ceremuga states "used examples had only a tiny survival rate"]
1884 Surcharges '½' on Wmk Crown/CC Perf 14 1d yellow-ochre SG 89 block of 10 (5x2), the fourth unit with Defective (Grinning) '2' in '½' & the eighth unit with '2' in Fraction Misplaced to Left of '1', large-part o.g. with eight units being unmounted, Cat £300++. The largest recorded unused block. [Dr Cecil Walkley's block of 9 - at the time believed to be the largest surviving Perf 14 block - sold for $1035]
1888 New Colours 1d carmine-pink, 2d grey & 4d red-brown blocks of 4, a few blemishes, Cat £160++. Rare used multiples, especially as a 'set'.
(Qty 3 blocks)
1902-11 V/Crown Perf 11 9d red-orange ACSC W49B (SG 133) marginal block of 8 (4x2) from the top of the sheet, two units lightly mounted otherwise full unmounted o.g., Cat $2000++ (£1440++) for mounted singles. A rare multiple. [NB: both the ACSC and Gibbons incorrectly state that the shade is "yellow-orange"]
1905-12 Crown/A Perf 11 2d dull yellow ACSC W23 (SG 152) marginal block of 15 (5x3) from the right of the sheet, two vertical rows of Double Perfs affecting nine units, twelve units are unmounted, Cat $900++ (£750) for mounted singles plus a substantial premium for the Double Perfs. A spectacular variety that is not recorded for this issue in the ACSC. Ex Trevor Hiscock: sold at the Prestige auction of 10.3.2007 for $862. [Almost certainly a contiguous piece to Dr Walkley's similar block - no side margin - that sold in 2005 for $1150]

[Both catalogues list only compound perfs, whereas this stamp is more properly classified as having Mixed Perfs]
1905-12 Crown/A Irregular Compound Perfs 2d orange-yellow Perf 11x12½x12x12½ BW #W25 (SG 162), Albany cds, Cat $750 (£550), as has been the case for many years. Rare.
