Cat No: 3b

image 1854-55 Lithographs 4d deep dull blue SG 3b, margins close to good, large-part o.g., Cat £2750. Rare. [This is one of those stamps that is very difficult to identify. More important than the shade is the quality of the printing whereby the Swan is poorly defined against the background. This was the first printing so should be listed as SG 3, not 3b. Genuine examples are scarcer than the more popular "slate blue" and should be worth significantly more]

image CYCLE EXPRESSES: 1897 (Jan) 6d Lake Lefroy pink/greenish, good colour of both paper & printing, the perforations unusually 'square' & therefore unusually well centred, a couple of slightly trimmed perfs at U/L and a shallow thin that doesn't detract from the exceptional facial appearance. Unlisted in the Reynolds & Pope Census and in the 2019 update. One of the few examples that don't have significant faults, and one of the finest examples we have noted. [Better centred & more attractive than the unused 'Besancon' (I) and (III) examples that sold for SFr4840 and SFr4560 respectively] There has been debate about whether or not these stamps were issued with gum. All other unused examples we have seen have no gum. However, this stamp has what appears to be original gum, but that cannot be guaranteed.
