THE BANKRUPTCY OF THE 1840 POSTMASTER; Remarkable small archive of 1839-43 papers relating to the sad case of Postmaster Josiah Evans' bankruptcy (following embezzlement of PO funds?); part printed privately carried local Jan 1839 EL seeking tenders for the "Newtown to Aberystwith" "MAIL COACH CONTRACT", 1 June 1840 cash-paid EL ex Lampeter Postmaster ref. 'lost' £5 Money Order that should have been been paid out by Evans, large printed 1 July 1840 "Deputy Postmaster's Bond" (made out for - and solely signed by - Josiah Evans; his solicitor's retained file copy?), Nov. 1840 battered bailiff's' form listing items to be seized from Evans (rebacked - at the time? - with unused printed P.O. "MONEY ORDER ADVICE" EL, 12 1841-3 Official Paid ELs from London PO officials chasing the c.£200 debt sent to Evans' lawyer and his guarantors (one noting that the Earl of Lisburne had already withdrawn his guarantee!), Mar. 1841 official partly printed PO "QUARTERLY ACCOUNT CURRENT" showing the debts (inc. £2-10s-9d for "Stamps transferred" as a credit), June 1841 cash-paid EL from Evans in "Jail Cardigan", and Apr. 1842 PO "Remittance Letter of Acknowledgement" EL ex London. [23 Feb. 1841; pencil date on reverse] to Stroud with 1d Black (Plate 5; LK - 4m but with rubbed top right corner) tied (by clear indentation) by fine black MX with matching v. fine "ABERYSTWITH" UDC on side-flap (opened up for display).
