1854-57 Queen-on-Throne Lithographs Campbell & Co Stone 9 2d dull purple-brown SG 20b vertical Interpanneau Pair [U-X/E-I], margins close to very large with an 18mm 'gutter' between the impressions, a couple of minor imperfections, BN '2' cancels of Geelong. Rare and, technically, an important piece. Ex John Boker, Joseph Hackmey and Martin Frischauf - illustrated on the back of the catalogue - sold for €3465. RPSofL Certificate (2000) states "faded", with which we do not agree: in 'The 2d Queen-on-Throne Stamps of Victoria', Geoff Kellow & John Shawley state at page 97 that the preparation of Stone 9 utilised an intermediate stone that resulted in a loss of detail in the stamps, many of which were printed in dull shades, often characterised as 'drab'.
Kellow & Shawley identify 13 such vertical inter-pane pairs, of which this is their Number 8, and the first of five from Stone 9. With the exception of one pair, all are cancelled at Geelong where the sheets of 100 - two panes of 50 - were not separated before being placed into the counter-stock, as was the case elsewhere.
1863-81 Laureates selection including Single-Line Numeral Wmk 1d & 2d, Wmk '8' 3d lilac x2, V/Crown 2d, 3d lilac SG 133, 4d x2 & 8d, etc, also Netted Corners 1d & 1873 Wmk '2' 9d, variable centring & condition but generally fine to very fine & several have large-part o.g., Cat £2800+.
(Qty 15)
1863-81 Laureates Emergency Printings on Tasmanian Double-Lined '4' Watermark 4d deep dull rose as SG 135 but with Vertical Marginal Watermark Lines Only and 'FOUR PENCE' Completely Omitted, light numeral cancel largely clear of the void area. Unlisted by Gibbons. Ex Gary Diffen: sold for £960. [The void was caused by a fault in the makeready blanket resulting in the value not printing. Geoff Kellow at page 163 states "...six to eight copies [sic] are recorded". [This is at least as striking an error as the Half-Length 2d with Void Corner or Value Omitted, both of which Gibbons do list, as SG 13d & 15d, priced at £22,000 and £15,000 respectively]
1863-81 Laureates Emergency Printings on Tasmanian Double-Lined '4' Watermark 4d deep dull rose as SG 135 but with 'FOUR PENCE' Completely Omitted (small fault at the top), with defective Emblems 2d tied to OHMS cover to Northern Ireland by Melbourne duplex of JA26/64. Ex Gary Diffen: sold for £420, an absurdly low price for such a rare & extraordinary franking. [See also the previous lot]
The cover has a very fine 'CURATOR OF THE ESTATES OF DECEASED PEOPLE' cachet at L/L. Addressed to "Loughwes Cowes/Co Down", it has a 'DOWN/MR19/64' arrival b/s, then endorsed "Try Ballygowan/Belfast" with b/s of MR24/64 of both places, then "try Newtownards" with 'COMBER/MR25/1864' transit b/s & framed arrival b/s of MR26/64, unframed 'NEWTOWNARDS/MR27/64' cds across the Melbourne duplex, finally endorsed in red "Not Called for" & with another strike of the framed Newtownards cds of MY10/64, presumably returned but with no Melbourne arrival.
1901-10 'POSTAGE' V/Crown Mixed Perforations 1½d red-brown/yellow U/L corner block of 8 (4x2) Perf 12½ with an Extra Line of Perf 11 at the Top, the U/R unit with a crease coincident with an interruption to the line of Perf 11, hinge reinforcing at the top, large-part o.g. Rare: only two other singles have been recorded. Ex Gary Diffen: sold for £1920. RPSofV Certificate (2009) as SG 411.
NB: the ACSC doesn't have a Mixed Perfs listing for this denomination but does list Irregular Compound Perfs V57, Cat $12,000+ for four singles. The Gibbons listing is for '[Irregular] Compound or Mixed Perfs' SG 411, Cat £5600 for four singles.
1905-13 'POSTAGE' Crown/A Mixed Perfs 2d violet Perf 12½ - misplaced at the top - with an additional line of Perf 11 at the top SG 448, '[ENGLIS]H MAIL TPO' duplex, undercatalogued at £375. Unlisted in the ACSC. RPSofV Certificate (2013).
1912- Re-Introduction of V/Crown Watermark Perf 12½ 1d Die III with the Watermark Sideways ACSC V52aa (SG 458a) 'JBC' Monogram block of 4 #V52aaza, lightly mounted, Cat $2000+. [The ACSC states "One 'CA' Monogram strip of 3 is recorded with the watermark sideways". No mention is made of 'JBC' monograms. Geoff Kellow at page 296 does not mention the sideways watermark variety]
