Literature comprising 'The Stamps of Victoria' by Kellow, 'Franked! The Official Mail' by Stieg & Watson, 'Port Phillip District' & 'The Barred Numerals' both by Purves, all h/b. Weighs 4kg.
(Qty 4)
1850-57 Half-Lengths Thomas Ham Third State (White Veils) 1d bright pinky red SG 12a extraordinary L/L corner block of 18 [43-60] with the two lower rows representing all 12 positions on the Intermediate Stone, full margins close to humungous, some creasing & minor gum blemishes plus tonespots in the bottom margin and a bit aged still of very fine facial appearance, large-part o.g., Cat £52,250++. A famous & dramatic showpiece. Ex Charles Lathrop Pack, Alfred Lichtenstein, Louise Boyd Dale and 'Besancon' (I). Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2018) notes "six central stamps never hinged". [Mr Ceremuga also states: "Major rarity of classic Victoria being the second-largest multiple known", being subordinate only to the incredible block of 30 (6x5), known to be from the same sheet: see Geoff Kellow at page 39]
NB: in the 'Besancon' catalogue, the shade was incorrectly classified as "reddish brown" SG 12 for which the catalogue value is almost three times as much as for SG 12a. It was sold for SFr36,300 - presumably on extension - and was returned. When subsequently offered as SG 12a it realised SFr19,360. (Image1)

1854-57 Campbell & Fergusson Half-Lengths 3d blue SG 31b [Pos 1] with the very elusive Artisan's Fingerprint Flaw (from the Queen's shoulder to the L/H frame), margins good to large, numeral cancel hardly impacts on the affected area, Cat £50++. Very rare: see Purves 'Half-Lengths' at p189 & Plate 27. [Absent from Gary Diffen's collection. NB: this stamp exhibits the natural variations of the poorer quality paper used. It is not thinned]

1858 Queen-on-Throne 6d bright blue as SG 73 but Imperforate, margins just touching - at upper-left - to good, two very fine partial strikes of the 'CANCELLED' handstamp, a couple of small imperfections, Cat £11,000. Ex JRW Purves, Rodney Perry, Conrad Latto, Peter Jaffé and Joseph Hackmey. RPSofL Certificate (2006). Only three examples recorded, of which this is Pos 2, and Pos 6 is in the Royal Collection. [NB: the issued stamps were rouletted in Melbourne. The so-called Ormond Hill Specimens were, in this case, created using stamps from an imperforate proof sheet retained by Perkins Bacon]

1859 Perf 12 by Robinson 1/- blue SG 81 block of 4 [20-21/28-29], remarkably well centred, a few stains & trimmed perfs at left still of very attractive appearance, large-part original gum, Cat £1600++. Ex Joseph Hackmey. RPSofL Certificate (2006). A rare multiple. There is a complete sheet of 100 and a block of 24 both in the Royal Collection but otherwise blocks are few & far between. [NB: the transfers were placed so close together that it's a wonder any of the perforated stamps of this issue are well centred]
1884-96 Large Stamp Duty Typo Wmk '33' Perf 12½ 45/- lilac SG 277 with 'Specimen.' handstamp, small black mark at upper-right, large-part o.g. Rare. [This is the closest to a mint example - Cat £11,000 - to which most collectors can aspire]
1884-96 Large Stamp Duty Typo Wmk '33' Perf 12½ 45/- lilac SG 277, very fresh with strong colour & only the merest traces of toning/aging at U/R, large-part o.g., Cat £13,000. A very rare stamp. Philatelic Foundation (1991) and BPA (2008) Certificates.
1884-96 Large Stamp Duty Typo Perf 12½ £10 mauve SG 279 with 'Specimen.' handstamp Type 24b, well centred, characteristic rough perfs, redistributed part-o.g., Cat £18,000 for unused. Extremely rare: Russell Turner has advised that eight 'Specimen' stamps have been recorded, of which two are in the Australia Post Archives. However, the six in private hands are represented by at least four different Specimen patterns. On that basis, no more than three examples with Type 24b are recorded. Considering that unused examples are virtually unattainable, this is the closest to an unused stamp that most collectors will have the opportunity to acquire.
1886-96 Ferguson & Mitchell High Values £7 rosine & black SG 326 with 'Specimen.' handstamp applied three times in black below the portrait, a couple of short perfs otherwise very fine with large-part o.g. This is as close as most people will be able to get to obtaining a mint example of this rare stamp: the 'Besancon' (I) unused example sold for €18,000 (Cat £18,000). [The 'Besancon' (I) £6 to £9 each with 'Specimen.' h/s sold for €4320, or €1080 each. It is interesting to note that the h/s was applied centrally & is obvious. That suggests that this stamp may be in the nature of a trial, which was clearly unsuccessful]
1905-13 'POSTAGE' Crown/A 1½d red-brown/yellow with Mixed Perfs 11x12½x12½x12½ ACSC V56B (SG 411), the line of Perf 11 misplaced & truncated at right so reperforated Perf 12½, the second unit with corner crease at L/R, hinged in the margins the stamps being unmounted, Cat $6000+ (£2800+) for mounted singles. A striking piece of extreme rarity. [The ACSC records one unused example & a rejoined pair with Perf 11 at top, and one used example with Perf 11 at the base]
1905-13 'POSTAGE' Crown/A 1d Die III Perf 12½ on Thin Pre-Gummed Paper ACSC V49 (SG 417d) 'CA' Monogram block of 8 (2x4) #V49z, reperforated vertically between the columns & the left-hand strip Officially Substituted with several of the characteristic small paper tabs, Cat $300+ for the Double Perfs plus a premium for the monogram. An exceptional specialist piece.
1905-13 'POSTAGE' Crown/A Perf 12½ 5/- rose-pink & blue with the Watermark Sideways ACSC V123aa (SG 430ab) U/L corner block of 4, well centred, full unmounted o.g., Cat $500++ (£480++) for mounted singles.
1905-13 'POSTAGE' Crown/A Perf 11 £2 blue ACSC V133 (SG 445) corner pair from the U/L of the sheet, full unmounted o.g., Cat $2500++ (£2600++) for mounted singles. Superb! A rare multiple, especially of this quality.
1905-13 'POSTAGE' Crown/A Mixed Perfs 1d Die III Perf 12½ with an additional line of Perf 11 at the top ACSC V47 (SG 447), a little aged, lightly mounted, undercatalogued at $200 (£95). [The ACSC records Perf 11 vertically only. Our vendor states that only four examples with Perf 11 horizontally have been recorded]
1905-13 'POSTAGE' Crown/A Mixed Perfs 1d Die III Perf 12½ - misplaced at the top - with an additional line of Perf 11 at the top SG 448, '[ENGLIS]H MAIL TPO' duplex, undercatalogued at £375. Unlisted in the ACSC. RPSofV Certificate (2013).
1905-13 'POSTAGE' Crown/A Irregular Compound Perfs 4d olive-bistre ACSC V89 (SG 450) Perf 12½x11x12½ x12½, fair strike of the rare 'POSTED MELBOURNE/DOWN EXPRESS' TPO cds, Cat $3000 (£1600). RPSofL Certificate (2019) states "mixed perfs" in error. [The ACSC records only three examples, all with Perf 11 at right, of which two are in the Royal Collection. This is a recent discovery, and only the second example in private hands]
1912- Re-Introduction of V/Crown Watermark Perf 12½ 1d Die III with the Watermark Sideways ACSC V52aa (SG 458a) 'JBC' Monogram block of 4 #V52aaza, lightly mounted, Cat $2000+. [The ACSC states "One 'CA' Monogram strip of 3 is recorded with the watermark sideways". No mention is made of 'JBC' monograms. Geoff Kellow at page 296 does not mention the sideways watermark variety]
1912 Re-Introduction of V/Crown Watermark Perf 12½ 9d red ACSC V109 (SG 460) L/L corner block of 8 (4x2) with 'JBC' Monogram, a couple of minor wrinkles otherwise superb with full unmounted o.g. The ACSC doesn't list monograms in this issue.
1912 Re-Introduction of V/Crown Watermark Perf 11 9d red ACSC V110 (SG 463) 'CA' Monogram L/R corner strip of 3. The ACSC doesn't list monograms in this issue.
BOOKLETS: 1911 Two Shillings red/pink with Revised Text on the Back & red/blue-green within ACSC B6(V)D (SG SB4) complete with Victoria Bantam ½d blue-green block of 12 & 1d pink unsevered block of 18 (folded as for three panes of 6), very fine apart from light pencil notations largely erased from the cover, Cat $6000 (£3500). [Arthur Gray's example of the cover only - no contents - sold in 2018 for £1080]

LOCAL STAMPS: c.1870 Murray Steam Navigation Co 'HALF PENCE' black, bisected and rejoined, unused. Despite the faults, this is a presentable example of one of the great rarities of Australian local stamps, believed to be only the third example discovered. Ex Jan Berg, where mentioned in a mixed lot. [Absent from Greg Frantz's collection. NB: the grammatical error was soon corrected to 'HALF PENNY']
LOCAL STAMPS: 1870s Murray Steam Navigation Company 1d red, unusually well centred, a couple of tiny thin spots that are of no consequence, faked cancel 'SPA' reversed! that we haven't encountered before.
