Large margins, cancelled by mute cork postmark on cover to Melbourne, Port Philip in Australia, thence forwarded to Hobart Town, "via England", endorsed "Per steamer Sept. 7th/53", taken directly to the docks by Boyd's, marked "Not Paid", likely carried on the "William Denny" that departed Greenock on Dec 12, 1853 and arrived Melbourne on Feb 20, 1854, with red dater "Paid Melbourne FE 20, 1854", indistinct red boxed handstamp dated Feb 23, 1854 at left, manuscript "3" and "6" rates probably for ship and forwarding postage to Tasmania. The backside of this cover shows circular dater "Launceston 22 FE 1854". Some faults including edgewear and pieces out at left. AN UNIQUE BOYD'S USE!

image THE "BARRED NUMERAL" CANCELLATIONS 1856-1906
Huge and highly valuable specialized collection with many thousands of stamps housed in 40 large albums. Included are "barred numerals" from number 1 (Melbourne) to 2100 (King Valley) with various different sub-types - all sorted according to the Hugh H. Freeman "The Barred Numerals of Victoria" catalogue.
The whole collection presents a tremendous compilation of rarities and is by estimate about 98% complete. We have found and counted more than 400 items rated "RRR", ca.250 items rated "RRRR" and more than 100 precious items with the highest rating "RRRRR". Furthermore and outright spectacular: many dozen pieces are the orginal examples shown in Freeman's catalogue, for instance the numerals 1825, 1833, 1837, 1838, 1847, 1849, 1899, 1934, 2053 and 2099.
Also included are obviously unlisted/unrecorded cancellations, colour varities, cancellations on foreign (non Victorian) stamps, attractive multiples, stamps on fragments, covers & cards etc.
Due to the very large amount of stamps, a depiction in our auction catalogue is limited to a restricted overwiev - otherwise a complete depiction (as far as possible) of this great collection will be available on the internet.
We are glad and proud to offer this "lifetime" Victorian Postmarks collection in our 50th Jubilee Auction Sale! (Image)
