POSTAL STATIONERY - ENVELOPES: 1894 (Stieg: KB15) 1d Orange-Brown PTPO Envelope for Bear's Patent Advertising Booklet, with 32pp advertising booklet enclosed; envelope with small tear, couple of hinges adhered to upper edge, the booklet in fine condition, unused. Another example sold for $2900 +comms at a February 2019 Melbourne auction.
A remarkable postal stationery item in which a crescent-shape slit was cut from the face of the envelope. When the booklet was inserted this opening allowed the embossing to impress upon the folded pages of the booklet within. Therefore the envelope could not be used without the inserted booklet. Advertisers found the scheme attractive as they only paid half-price for the envelopes, after paying for their adverts.
