image MAIL RECOVERED FROM THE WRECK OF THE S.S.HUNGARIAN; Rare 4 Feb. 1860 small env. to Halifax franked 4d + pair 1d Red all tied or cancelled by '23' London numeral cancels with Liverpool transit d.s. on front and Charing Cross WC cds and Halifax arrival d.s. on rear. Carried on the Allan Line S.S.Hungarian which ran ashore at Cape Ledge enroute to Portland (Maine) resulting in the deaths of all aboard, the mail recovered wet but fully intact. Four examples of mail from this wreck recorded by Hoggarth & Gwynn (2003) and only the second example we have offered. Major exhibition item.
