Service" from Lewis Gilles to John Leake, showing a very good strike of the Type 2 double oval handstamp of Launceston, rated 4d following the Sept.27 1832 rate reductions, minor soiling. [In 1833 Leake purchased part of Gilles' estate near Ross Bridge on the Macquarie River]. (Image)

1840 (June 16) entire to Roslin, Scotland, sent "p Hamilton" departing from Launceston with largely complete strike of the large oval '[Crown]/GENERAL POST OFFICE/HOBART TOWN/VDL/16JU16/1840' datestamp struck in black , initially rated "8" but scored-through and re-rated "9", 'SHIP LETTER" and '8NO8/1840' datestamp in red applied in London, 'ROSLIN/PENNY POST' handstamp applied on arrival in Scotland, re-directed to Edinburgh. Fine example of the Hobart crown oval datestamp, struck in black in 1840 only.
 
The subject of the letter is the number of sheep missing from the flock on the farm owned by the recipient. The writer advances his suspicions regarding who has stolen them. (Image)

image 1857 (Sept.19) inwards entire to Launceston from Mauritius endorsed "p Cantero" & "favod(favoured)/by Capn Walters" with 'SHIP-LETTER INWARDS FREE/31OC/1857' boxed handstamp overstamped '2NO/1857 to correct the date, plus another strike with the correct '2NO/1857' dateline scored through, on reverse fine strike of 'SHIP-LETTER INWARDS FREE/2NO/1857' diamond datestamp. Most unusual combination of cancellations. The letter proposes a partnership in a shipment of sugar from Mauritius to Tasmania. (Image)
