1855 London Printings Imperf 6d blue SG 3 horizontal pair, margins close - at U/R - to large with fragments of five adjoining units, light Adelaide roller cancel, Cat £340+ for singles. An unusually large & fine multiple.
1856-58 Adelaide Printings Imperf 2d red SG 9 horizontal pair from the left of the sheet, margins good to huge, large-part o.g., Cat £1500+. An unusually large & attractive pair.
1858-59 First Roulettes 1/- orange Printed on Both Sides SG 18a, the original faint printing on the "reverse" shows parts of four units, small faults, GPO cds in blue, Cat £2500. Rare: about 20 examples have been recorded. [Gary Diffen's very fine example sold for £1320]

1860-69 Second Roulettes 2d pale vermilion SG 25 block of 8, separation fault between the third & fourth units, a few minor wrinkles, large-part o.g. with all lower units being unmounted, Cat £1280++. A very scarce & desirable block.
1860-69 Second Roulettes 4d imperforate plate proof corner block of 36 (6x6) from the lower-left of the sheet in dull rose-carmine on ungummed unwatermarked paper, margins close to huge, ironed-out horizontal creases at the top of the second & sixth rows otherwise of very fine appearance. An impressive multiple.
1860-69 Second Roulettes 'TEN PENCE' in Blue on 9d yellow SG 36 Overprint Sub-Type V (straight 'TEN'), cut from the sheet to preserve the design, large-part o.g., Cat £800.
1860-69 Second Roulettes 'TEN PENCE' in Black on 9d yellow with the Surcharge Inverted at the Top SG 37a, small separation fault at the base, very fine 20mm 'G.P.O ADELAIDE/OC18/69/S.A' cds, Cat £7500. An attractive example of this famous error of which "Shilling Violet" No 16 (Sep 1989) noted the existence of a mere 15 examples (not including Peter Jaffé's unique pair). [Michael Blake's very fine example sold for $10,485]
1860-69 Second Roulettes 2/- imperforate plate proof marginal block of 24 (6x4) from the right of the sheet in black on ungummed unwatermarked paper, margins close to huge, an ironed-out vertical crease affects the second-last column. Large plate proof blocks of the Perkins Bacon issues are very scarce.
1867-70 Perf 11½-12½xRoulettes 'TEN PENCE' in Black on 9d yellow Printed on Both Sides SG 59a, a couple of ironed-out creases & a bit aged, lightly cancelled, Cat £1300. [Harry's Lower's - perfs at top slightly trimmed - and Michael Blake's examples sold for $1322 & $1514 respectively. Gary Diffen's example sold for £660]
The truly remarkable feature of this stamp is that, because the surcharge is on the front only, the reverse is a 9d yellow which, of course, was never issued!
1867-70 Perf 11½-12½xRoulettes 'TEN PENCE' in Blue on 9d yellow Printed on Both Sides SG 59a, ironed-out horizontal crease, neat 'ROBE/SP11/69/SA' cds, Cat £1300. Ex Henry Frenckle (1979). 1868-79 Perf 11½-12½ 'TEN PENCE' in Blue on 9d yellow with Crown/SA Watermark (Reversed) SG 78a, a couple of minor defects, GPO cds of NO11/68, Cat £1700. Rare & underappreciated. [The Robson Lowe Encyclopaedia states that this is a watermark error. In the catalogue for the John Griffiths collection, it was stated that this was a trial printing on the paper to be used for the new De La Rue 2d SG 152, issued in August 1868. Whatever the case, it is an underrated stamp, partly because it is difficult to locate in the Gibbons catalogue where it is currently listed as part of the Large Star Watermark issue]

1868-79 Perf 11½-12½ 'TEN PENCE' in Blue on 9d yellow with Crown/SA Watermark SG 78a with vertical watermark line at left & Overprint Sub-Type IV (?), an attractive example with full perfs, GPO cds of NO11/68, Cat £1700. A very scarce and underrated stamp, partly because it is difficult to locate in the Gibbons catalogue. [Harry Lower's and Michael Blake's examples sold for $2990 and $2446 respectively]
Both students and catalogue editors have had difficulty in categorising this stamp: the Robson Lowe Encyclopaedia states that this is a watermark error. In the catalogue for the John Griffiths collection, it was stated that this was a trial printing on the paper to be used for the new De La Rue 2d SG 152, issued in August 1868. In Gibbons' 1895-96 edition, it had a separate listing under Crown/SA Watermark as SG 60; in 1908 it was listed under the 1867-70 issue as an Error of Watermark, still with a full number SG 67; by 1920 the listings had been revised & this stamp, still noted as an error, was assigned to the Large Star Watermark issue where it remains.

1868-76 De La Rue Wmk Crown/SA Rouletted 2d orange-red marginal vertical pair from the base of the sheet Imperf Horizontally SG 153c, neat Diamond Numeral '108' cancels of Callington, Cat £7500. Ex Gary Diffen: sold for £3600. The only recorded example in private hands: the only other recorded piece is a strip of 3 in the Tapling Collection, in the British Library.
1876-1904 De La Rue Narrow Crown/SA Perf 10 1d green with Double Print SG 167bb, quite well centred for this issue, tonespot that shows through the face, undercatalogued at £400. BPA Certificate (1993) as the then SG 169var, plus a letter from the editor of the Gibbons catalogues confirming that this stamp would be listed from the 1994 edition. [Far more attractive than the only other recorded example, which is poorly centred]

1883-99 Bantam Perf 10x11½-12½ ½d red-brown horizontal pair Imperf Between SG 186a, a few short perfs at left otherwise very fine, large-part o.g., Cat £2000. Rare: only two other examples recorded. Ex Rev James Mursell (1964) and Gary Diffen: sold for £960.
1886-96 'POSTAGE & REVENUE' Perf 10 15/- dull yellow-orange SG 198, exceptional centring, large-part o.g., Cat £850. Chris Ceremuga Certificate (2020). [NB: the shades given by Gibbons are for the later Perf 11½-12½ issue, and are often markedly different from the shades of the original printings]

RPSofL Certificate (1953). [The ACSC states "...the authorities withdrew the stock and removed the error from sheets prior to re-issue. It has been stated officially that 45 to 50 of the stamps were issued...which accords with the numbers now extant...It is much rarer used than mint". Sold at the Prestige auction of 10.4.2010 for $3030. Gary Diffen's example - with fake cancellation - sold for £1200]
1902-04 Thin 'POSTAGE' 8d ultramarine with 'EIGNT PENCE' in the Value Tablet ACSC S26c (SG 272a), well centred, very fine 'PARCEL PO ADELAIDE/MR17/04/S.A' cds well clear of the variety, Cat $3000 (£3000). [The ACSC states "it is much rarer used than mint": only 12 examples have been recorded, of which this is one of the finest. At least four of the used examples are CTO. Postally used examples, both with the cancel across 'EIGNT', sold at the Prestige auctions of 10.4.2010 & 23.9.2011 for $2990 & $2796]

1902-04 Thin 'POSTAGE' Perf 12 3d olive-green with 'POSTAGE' & the Value Misplaced BW #S19c (SG 280a var), very lightly mounted, undercatalogued at $750 (2004). [Only one sheet of 60 (10x6) was discovered, on which the lower row exhibited the rare 'POSTAGE' Omitted. All 10 examples have survived, in the L/L block of 9, a block of 6 (2x3), the L/R block of 15 (5x3), and a single. That means of the 50 examples of this variant, no more than 29 are available. Michael Blake's similar example sold for $992]
1902-04 Thin 'POSTAGE' Perf 12 3d olive-green 'POSTAGE' & the Value Misplaced BW #S19c horizontal pair, well centred, very lightly mounted, Cat $1500+ (2004). Ex John Williams (UK): sold at the Prestige auction of 6.3.2010 for $1860. [The ACSC states "One sheet...showed the overprint plate misplaced upwards 4½mm". 1905-11 Crown/A 1d rose-pink 'JBC' Monogram pair BW #S6zc, a couple of small closed pinholes in the margin adjacent to but not intruding on the monogram, lightly mounted, grossly under-catalogued at $150. [Sold at the Prestige auction of 24.5.2008 for $932, supporting our contention that the value in the catalogue is a grievous error. Subsequently, Prestige sold a 1d block of 12 for $1340, and a 2d block of 9 for $1864]
OFFICIAL STAMPS: Extensive array of 'O.S.'
