image EXETER - RARE OVAL "Ship Letter/[Crown]/EXETER" ON U.S. COVER WITH CONTENTS REF. BLOCKADE, ETC.; 3 May 1806 EL (minor toning) from "New York" to Manchester endorsed "Pr. [Ship] Otis [by] London" but having a mainly very fine (for this) rare oval-framed "Ship Letter/[Crown]/EXETER" on the front of which very few examples - almost always much poorer strikes than this - have been recorded. There is a also a v. fine red London Inspector's Crown cancelling a "1/2" rate that was changed to "2/4" (2 sheets) and then "2/8". The interesting contents concern the cotton trade and include; "I now enclose you a Government Bill for £500... endorsed by Messrs. Burns' John Jacob Astor... His private property is said to be worth not less than $500,000... I have examined the letters which are...suspected to have been opened but cannot perceive that they were...there are two frigates off the harbour which fired and killed a man on board of a coasting sloop a few days ago...". It seems that the British Navy was blockading some US ports following Napoleon's 1806 Blockade, rare and interesting.Cross Reference: UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TRANSATLANTIC MAIL, MILITARY - NAPOLEONIC WAR, DEVON (Image)
