image LIVERPOOL - "LIVERPOOL/EXEMPT SHIP" ON 3d-RATE "CONSIGNEES" COVER REF. IRISH FAMINE AID EX U.S.A.; 15 May 1847 EL from New York to the "Secy. to Central Committee of Society of Friends" in Dublin endorsed "Pr. Stephen Whitney" and "Consignees" on the front and so having a very fine rare "LIVERPOOL/EXEMPT SHIP" mark and m/s "3[d]" (Consignees Letter rate) on the front, also with fair boxed "LIVERPOOL/SHIP" d.s. on reverse. The contents refer to the goods sent along with this letter; "508 barrels Corn Meal... an additional offering on the part of the inhabitants of Louisville Kentucky and its vicinity, and is intended for gratuitous distribution under your good care & direction, among the suffering poor of Ireland...". Rare mark and important historical contents. Cross Reference: TRANSATLANTIC MAIL, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, LANCASHIRE - LIVERPOOL, IRELAND PRE-1922 - POSTAL HISTORY (Image)

image LIVERPOOL - H.S. "3" REPLACED BY H.S. "8" IN "CONSIGNEES" COVER REF. IRISH FAMINE AID EX U.S.A.; 19 June 1848 EL from New York to the "Secys. to Central Relief Committee Society of Friends" in Dublin endorsed "Consignees" on the front and so having a very fine rare Liverpool h.s. "3" mark (filing fold) on the front, but this was crossed through and replaced by a v. fine matching h.s. "8" (the regular Ship Letter rate); presumably this was because the ship's name had not been endorsed on the front of the letter. Also with partly fine boxed "LIVERPOOL/SHIP" d.s. on reverse. The contents (headed "P Ship Andrew Foster") refer to the goods sent along with this letter; "40 barrels of Bread Stuff, say 23 Blls Flour & 17 Blls Indian Corn..." and are signed by "James Reyburn, Treasurer, Irish Relief Com[missio]n." A matching Irish Famine cover to the previous lot which was correctly endorsed on the front with the ship name and so successfully qualified for the 3d Exempt rate.Cross Reference: POSTAGE DUE MARKS, IRELAND PRE-1922 - POSTAL HISTORY, UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, TRANSATLANTIC MAIL (Image)
