BEER DUTY - BOTTLES: 1885 proofs in or close to the issued colours on thin to medium card (each 27x3mm approximately), comprising 6d deep mauve (CTO), 1/- vermilion, 2/- red-violet & 2/3d deep blue-green, Elsmore Online Cat $1200. At first glance, these appear to be plate proofs. However, the wide margins - especially on the 2/3d - raise the possibility that they are die proofs, and the question: "Have any multiples been recorded?" (4)
BEER DUTY - BOTTLES: 1885 Crown Security Backprint 1/- ('4 GALLONS') vermilion, minor thin; 1/3d ('5 GALLONS') buff-yellow, very fine; 4/6d ('18 GALLONS') black, very fine; & 6/9d ('27 GALLONS') blue, minor soiling, manuscript "2.8.87"; unframed (the 1/-) or framed 'CANCELLED' handstamps, Elsmore Online Cat $575 plus the 1/3d, which is unrecorded by Dave Elsmore in this issue. [The backprint is a large but usually faint crown that is difficult to see without a magnifier] (4)
BEER DUTY - BOTTLES: 1885 Crown Security Backprint 3d ('1 GALLON') light brown & 2/- ('8 GALLONS') dull claret both with part of the Papermaker's Watermark '[VA]LLE[Y]' (Sideways), framed 'CANCELLED' handstamps. Dave Elsmore doesn't record the 2/- with Security Backprint, and doesn't record any stamps from this issue with the papermaker's watermark. He does note this variety on the No Watermark 3d & 4/6d, Cat $350 each. (2)
BEER DUTY - BOTTLES: 1901-18 Provisionals 1898 Crown in Design Bisected with Central Horizontal Line of Perf 12, being the Upper-Half of 6d ('2 GALLONS') orange-buff, manuscript endorsement "Silver/[signature]/Jan 07/1908", seriffed 'CANCELLED' handstamp in violet, Elsmore Online Cat $800. Rare & curious. The first example we have seen.

A rarity. [The catalogue price is $500 for a mint label, x2 for a used half but complete used labels are not recorded]
BEER DUTY - BULK: 1886 Chalon Portrait No Watermark 6/9d 'HALF-HOGSHEAD', central fold & a couple of repaired tears, 'CANCELLED' h/s & manuscript "August 18th 1886", Elsmore Online Cat $500. Dave Elsmore records this issue as being of 1887.

BEER DUTY - BULK: 1897 Crown in Design 1/3d ('5 gallons') lilac, ironed-out creases & soiling, large boxed 'CANCELLED/8DEC1905/WEST END BREWERY LTD' cachet in violet, Elsmore Online Cat $300.
