image BEER DUTY: 1887 3d 'ONE GALLON', perfs trimmed-off, a couple of faults at the top & extensively stained, Elsmore Online Cat $800. This & the next 12 lots are the best selection of these dramatic & rare labels we have offered. Because of the regulation that they had to be defaced, most used examplest have significant faults, as described. However, they are so elusive, in any condition, that we believe it is prudent to offer them as singles, and establish what the market considers them to be worth. Our estimates reflect the condition, which is probably at least average for stamps that were supposed to be destroyed.

image IMPRESSED STAMP DUTY: 1885 lengthy 'Assignment' of Property on vellum with superb colourless embossing of 'ONE/POUND' on Prussian blue paper cut-square with wide margins affixed & secured by a foil 'staple', behind it an imperf 2nd Type Cypher Label affixed across the staple (see Peck & Smith at page 35), executed by "TWBuckland" at Sydney & later by "Daniel Cooper" in London where a quarto letterhead was bound to the face notarising the latter's signature, with the duty paid on the face by fiscal usage of British Lilacs & Greens 1/- tied by the notary's blue seal, on the reverse is the 1886 receipt of the document at the NSW Registrar-General's Office, minor soiling but overall very fine. See the illustration above Lot 794.  In 1856, at the age of only 35, Sir Daniel Cooper was appointed the first Speaker of the new NSW Legislative Assembly. By the time he returned to the UK in 1861 he had amassed huge property interests in the Colony & these are recorded in painful detail in this document. He became one of the most prominent of the early philatelists &, in 1869, was elected the first President of the Philatelic Soceity of London. When his impressive collection was sold in 1878 for £3000, it was the first four-figure result for a stamp collection. (Image1)
